Mighty Marissa's Medical Fund

May I ask a favor, for my niece and my family? A little over 2 weeks ago my 10-year-old niece, Marissa, was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma – one of the rarest forms of soft tissue cancer in the world. My family was devastated by this news. After the initial shock and some follow-up testing at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, the doctors have recommended an aggressive round of radiation treatments lasting a total of 5 weeks, followed by surgery. All of this will require that either my brother or sister-in-law must make weekly trips from Boise to Salt Lake City to be with my niece while she receives treatment and additional visits for the surgeries themselves.
Expenses, as a result of these trips, and medical procedures are already adding up. My brother is the sole breadwinner for his family and is already tapping his time off allowance from his job to be there for his wife and children. He is a police officer serving the people of this community with pride and tireless dedication. He puts himself out there on the front line for others daily. May I ask for some support for him and his family at this time?
My brother is an exemplary officer and public servant. He and my sister-in-law are amazing parents and both of my nieces are kind, loving, and compassionate girls. My niece Marissa is a horse lover, a wealth of encyclopedic knowledge when it comes to dinosaurs and birds, and one of the most tender-hearted, sympathetic people I have ever known.
Statistics show that the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States is medical expenses. We are already discovering that there are many things that won’t be covered by insurance throughout all of this. Including the 5 weeks of radiation treatment, there are consult fees with the neurosurgeon, plastic/neuro-muscular reconstruction surgeon, and two pediatric oncologists, CT scans, MRIs, surgery and follow up surgeries, nerve grafting, rehabilitation, and follow-up for the next 5 years. The enormity of this going forward is an additional burden on my brother and his family.
I am reaching out to those of you in my circle of family and friends for help and a moment of your time. I have set up this fund for my brother and his family – for Marissa – to help with some of the medical costs and travel expenses that have begun, and will continue to accrue, as a result of my niece’s diagnoses. My brother is a proud man but I believe in the power of compassion and the strength of our community and know that there are those out there who will stand beside him and his family in this time of great need. If you can find a way to share some of your resources with him, I can assure you that he, and we, would be forever grateful.
As the old song goes:
If you haven’t got a penny, a ha’penny will do
If you haven’t got a ha’penny, then God bless you!
Any amount will help, I assure you. Additionally, would you consider passing on this message (and the GoFundMe link) on your social media outlets? Your kindness in doing so will help to reach many more than I can manage as one person.
I offer my gratitude in advance on behalf of my family and would ask, if you’d please be so kind, to hold Marissa in your thoughts and remember her in your prayers.
Thank you, thank you…a thousand times, THANK YOU.
