We are the Millom Clock Trust and we are raising money to restore Millom's town clock to full working order and give the people of Millom, Cumbria a town square to be proud of again.
History
Founded in 1866, Millom, Cumbria became centred around the local ironworks which helped the town grow to a size of over 10,000 people by the 1960s. After the closure of the ironworks in 1968, the town began to have money troubles and the population fell to just 7,101 by the 1971 census.
Today, Millom is Fairtrade town and home to nearly 8000 people within the town working in a variety of industries with the majority serving agriculture, retail, services, tourism, BAE Systems, the nearby prison in Haverigg and Sellafield nuclear power station.
Millom Market Square in 1905
The Market Hall and council offices in the town square were built in 1879, and beneath the bottom arches were an indoor market which lasted to the late 1930s. Unfortunately, around the 1960s clock tower of the council building had to be lowered due to structural problems, to form the shape know today.
After the county boundaries were re-establish in 1971, Millom eventually became governed by the Borough of Copeland. Eventually there was no need for council-owned buildings in Millom and the clock tower became privately owned in 2001. It was during this time that unfortunately the 3-faced clock fell into disrepair and the old workings removed leaving us with nothing but an empty shell.
Current Situation
In May 2016, the clock tower was purchased by Guy Lovell and Jacqueline Gandy to house their new restaurant; The Clock Tower Restaurant. With thanks to Guy and Jacqueline, they have been gracious enough to form an agreement with us to install a new clock on behalf of the people of Millom. Should the building ever change hands again, the 3-faced clock will continue to be managed by the Millom Clock Trust.
How Funds Will Be Used
The entirety of our funding goal will be used to finance the purchase of new clock mechanisms and electronic parts to run the 3-faced clock as well as completely refurbishing the 3 external clock faces on the top of the tower.
Stretch Goals
Any additional funding received past our goal will be used to fund the continued maintenance and operation of the clock over the years to come. By chance we dramatically exceed our goal, we’ll look to improving the town square further and surrounding areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Council doing to help?
Council funding is very limited, so contributions at this point are not available for this project. However several local councillors are Trustess (see above), including Councillor Doug Wilson, who is giving a percentage of the Mayor's Charity fund to the Trust. We are also been supported by all local councillors.
Why aren't the building owners funding this themselves?
The owners have no obligation to fix or maintain the clock themselves and as you can see it is very expensive to have it repaired! Understandly they have their own affairs to worry about, however the town is lucky to have people owning the building that will allow this formal agreement to be put in place so we can get it working again.
Who will own the new clock?
Under our new agreement, the clock faces will continue to be owned by the building owners. All internal mechanisms and parts will be owned by the people of Millom and managed by the Millom Clock Trust.
What is Millom Clock Trust?
Millom Clock Trust is a newly formed and constituted democratic and non-profit organisation which has the sole objective of restoring and maintaining Millom's town clock located on the Market Square.
