Have you ever imagined how your life would change if you couldn’t control your body? Would you be able to keep living life as you have been? For me the year that I turned 19 I discovered the answer to those questions when I was involved in a violent event that left me with a traumatic brain injury.
For those who don’t know brain injuries are a bit weird. The first 6 months after the injury are crucial in determining the severity of the damage because symptoms can continue appear years after the injury was sustained.
In my experience I struggled with balance, stuttering, aphasia, and seizures amongst other things. Needless to say my life came to a complete stop, and I spent the next year going in and out of the hospital as doctors tried to mitigate the symptoms of my injury.
This process continued until at the end of 2023 my body began to stabilize. As I have continued to navigate what feels like a whole new body I discovered a few things.
First, people treated me differently after my injury. Second, finding a job that is willing to accommodate my needs as a person with a disability feels nearly impossible despite having a certificate in animal sciences, an associate’s degree, and a bachelor’s degree. Third, the world is not kind to those who are different. There have been times when I have had to fight for my rights to participate in events with my peers.
I learned these things through personal experience, but it has helped me find my passion. I believe that by providing education and bringing disability into our communities’ social awareness the quality of life that is available to us can become equal to others in society. Please help me take this next step towards my dreams by donating so that I can share my message on an international stage!
