Brian's Fight

On Sunday July 31st  2016, Brian Mitzel was getting ready for work when he began throwing up.

He thought he may have a touch of the flu. He threw up on and off for the next two days then went to see a doctor. The doctor thought it was a flare up of Brian’s Crohn’s Disease – an inflammation of the bowel which Brian has had since he was 17yrs old. Medication would usually settle things down, but not this time.

Brian was rushed to Emergency at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon on Aug 3rd 2016.

All tests and scans pointed to a Crohn’s flare up that was causing a blockage in his intestines in a couple of places. For three weeks Brian was treated with medications to bring his Crohn’s disease under control and to try to reduce the inflammation-thus relieving the blockage.

Brian continued to throw up for those three weeks even though he hadn’t had any food for almost a month – the medication was not working.

At about 10 days into his stay in hospital, Brian all of a sudden passed out. His heart rate was over two hundred beats per minute and his other vitals were low. Tests revealed he had two large blood clots – one in each lung. (Crohn’s Disease puts you at a higher risk for blood clots as well) Brian battled back and in three days had his vitals and heart rate under control.

On Aug 25th, 2016, the doctors decided that surgery was needed. Because of the blood clots in his lungs, this surgery became high risk for Brian. Brian was taken down to surgery to remove the parts of his intestines that contained the blockage.

The surgeon opened Brian up and all he found was cancer. No surgery was performed and the blockages were not removed. He closed Brian back up, unable to do anything to improve the situation.

Brian’s wife Bonnie, along with their children Kandace and Adam have been sitting vigil by Brian’s bedside day after day as he continues his fight. Many hours of work have been missed in order to spend precious time with their husband / dad. We are aware that situations like these can cause financial hardship to a family.

We are asking for your assistance in easing some of the stress and worry by giving generously. No donation is too small. We hope this will remove some financial pressure and allow the family to be where they need to be……………….with Brian.

Thank you for your support and kindness.
