As most of my friends here on social media know Moose is battling an undiagnosed ailment. He first presented with a small bump on April 10th a few days later he licked the bump and it ulcerated causing a fever. We immediately took him to our vet where he took a look at it and diagnosed cellulitis. We were sent home with the antibiotic Cephalexin and a few days later the wound looked to be healing and his fever lowered. The day after this was when the swelling began. It came on fast and aggressive and started near the wound and went up. I called my vet back who said it must be the cellulitis still and to try compression bandaging and cold compress and to call back within a few days. The next day the swelling worsened and I knew I had to get him back to the vet. The vet did an EKG and ultrasound but could not give us a definitive diagnoses but was suspecting Dilated cardiomyopathy. We made the plans to do an echocardiogram this Tuesday but Friday night Moose began breathing rapidly and it scared me so bad we rushed him in to the emergency vet that minute. They did a radiograph of his heart and she he was not in heart failure but they didn't have the equipment to do a full work up on him and told us about another emergency vet that had the correct equipment. We went home and gave Moose more pain meds which slowed his breathing and he was able to sleep through the night. Saturday morning we took him to Oradell Emergency and they sent us over to orthopedics. He had to be sedated and they took radiographs of his leg. The diagnosis is still inconclusive but they did see that there is a mass where the bump originated. She said this could either be an abscess but could also be a cancerous mast cell tumor. She could not aspirate the mass because there is so much fluid that the test would not be viable. So they did a culture to find out what bacteria is growing so they can treat it accordingly. They also did a full blood work up which she said showed normal levels and that it didn't appear Moose was in heart failure. She gave us the option for overnight hospitalization but it was quoted at $5,000 which we can not afford after the money we have spent so far. She decided to send us home with clavamox a wide spectrum antibiotic and more pain meds and to also give him benadryhl ever 8 hours because in the case of a mast cell tumor they release histamine and cause swelling. Today is now Sunday and while there is a slight bit or improvement Moose is in a lot of pain and can hardly walk. We will not get the culture results back for a week so in the mean time we have to keep Moose as comfortable as possible. There is still a very real possibility that Moose could go south very quickly and would need hospitalization. I have always prided myself on always making sure that I had the means to completely care for my animals if there was an emergency. Moose unfortunately had a severe prostate infection in December that sent us to the Emergency twice that drained our funds and we have not been able to catch back up yet. Moose is a trooper but he is in so much pain and is so miserable. This is taking a huge toll on my family as well. Moose needs 24 hour around the clock care and I’ve hardly slept. My husband works overnights so it’s just me and Moose and he can hardly walk or get out to use the restroom. He cannot afford to take any time off of work either. Anything helps even just a share.
