Mr. William Clifford Westerman holds a special place in our hearts. We met him 7 years ago at Essex Elementary School in Centerbrook, CT. He and his wife, Maryann, would arrive at the end of the day to pick up their two young grandsons. We learned that his son was battling cancer. "Cliff" and his wife had taken on a large roll in taking care of their grandsons while their son was in treatment. Cliff had also helped his son, Rick, of Westerman and Sons, install our garage door. They worked together as a team with his young grandson helping out as well. One year later, his son, Rick, lost his battle. I had heard that the crossing guard position was open at the school and Cliff came to my mind. He was a perfect fit for the position. Caring, Genuine. Honest. Upstanding. Compassionate. Cliff has been safely crossing students every morning and afternoon for six years. You will see him in his bright yellow vest and sturdy Stop sign on the coldest of days, in wind and rain and on bright warm days and always with a friendly smile and wave. Our school community is so fortunate to have such a loving person caring for our children. Cliff was recently diagnosed with Colon Cancer. He is unable to have surgery until he goes through a regiment of chemotherapy and radition. The hope is to shrink the tumor enough to have surgery. Cliff lives a modest life with his wife, Maryann, of 54 years. He loves to tinker with tractors. This is our oppourtunity to help Cliff out with medical bills and help while he is out of work and going through treatments. We cannot express how grateful we are to have Cliff in our lives and how thankful we are for your donations.
