Música Sin Fronteras

My name is Manuela Sánchez-Goubert, a Colombian born, NYC raised singer-songwriter. Along with my band, we are raising money for our upcoming music project in the summer of 2024 in Latin America. We will travel to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru to play my music, a fusion between traditional Latin American rhythms, and jazz. We will also offer free outreach activities including workshops in songwriting, production, and music therapy to music students and underserved communities with the aid of the NGO Temblores.

But, how did all this happen? Let me tell you my story.

Born in Bogotá to a family with ties to Latin American music, I moved to NYC at nine years old and studied jazz at the LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. As I began composing, my two worlds of Latin American folk and jazz intersected, and I discovered my sound as an artist. Combining these traditions, I channeled the estrangement we often feel as immigrants by writing songs with Latin American rhythmic patterns and melodies, and modern jazz harmony. Then, I began my studies at Berklee under a full tuition scholarship, where I met these fellow musicians, who have now become my family.

My story has been full of joy and healing due to the power of music. Because of this, I feel the need to share it with the world. The rhythms of these countries do not have enough visibility and relevance in today's music industry, and I feel the responsibility to contribute my bit in globalizing this music and educating the underserved youth in Latin America.

For these reasons, along with my team, we’ve decided to take this music to as many places as possible. After a lot of thorough planning, we decided to make it happen. With the support of partner organizations, we plan to go to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. We will play at some awesome venues, and with the support of the NGO Temblores, we will bring master classes and workshops to populations that do not have access to them.

We are really happy and excited to bring this music and tools to Latin America; however, excitement doesn’t pay the bills (haha) and because of this, we have designed a fundraising plan to make this project a reality. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by August 1st, 2024.

We have already gotten much support from our partner organizations, but part of the overall fundraising plan is this GoFundMe so that everyone who wants to support our project and participate in some way, can do it through this medium. Any donation and / or help sharing this campaign will be fundamental to carry out this project. We appreciate you!

Mi nombre es Manuela Sánchez-Goubert, una compositora y vocalista nacida en Colombia y criada en Nueva York. Junto con mi banda, estamos recaudando fondos para nuestro proyecto “Música Sin Fronteras”. En el verano de 2024 en América Latina, viajaremos a Colombia, Ecuador y Perú para tocar nuestra música, una fusión entre ritmos tradicionales latinoamericanos y jazz. También ofreceremos actividades musicales gratuitas, como talleres de composición, producción y musicoterapia, a determinadas comunidades desfavorecidas con la ayuda de la ONG Temblores y organizaciones educativas. En total, daremos 15 conciertos y 9 talleres.

Pero, ¿cómo surgió todo esto? Déjenme contarles mi historia.

Nací en Bogotá en una familia vinculada a la música. A los nueve años, emigré a Nueva York y estudié jazz en la LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. Cuando empecé a componer, mis dos mundos, el folclore latinoamericano y el jazz, se cruzaron y descubrí mi sonido como artista. Como emigrante, aprendí a expresar mi sentimiento de alienación escribiendo canciones en grooves sudamericanos con armonías y melodías contemporáneas. Después fui aceptada en la universidad de sus sueños, Berklee College of Music, con una beca completa. Allí conocí a músicos increíbles, quienes se convirtieron en mi familia, y formé una banda con ellos.

Mi historia ha estado llena de alegría y curación gracias al poder de la música. Por eso siento la necesidad de compartirla con el mundo. Los ritmos de estos países no tienen suficiente visibilidad y relevancia en la industria musical actual, y siento la responsabilidad de aportar mi granito de arena a la justicia social, llevando esta música a nuevas audiencias y aportando a la educación de jóvenes desfavorecidos de Latinoamérica.

Por estas razones, junto con mi equipo hemos decidido llevar esta música a tantos lugares como sea posible. Después de mucho planearlo, decidimos hacerlo realidad. Visitaremos Colombia, Ecuador y Perú. Tocaremos en lugares increíbles y, a través de la colaboración con organizaciones culturales y educativas, llevaremos clases magistrales y talleres a poblaciones que no tienen acceso a ellos.

Estamos muy contentos y emocionados de llevar esta música y herramientas a América Latina, pero la emoción no paga las facturas (jaja). Por esto, hemos diseñado un plan de recaudación de fondos on GoFund Me para hacer este proyecto una realidad. Nuestro objetivo es recaudar $10,000 para Agosto 1, 2024.

Ya hemos conseguido apoyo parcial de las organizaciones asociadas, pero necesitamos completar la recaudación de fondos a través de este GoFundMe.
