Brazil: Study Abroad 2014
Hola Family, Friends, and Good Samaritans, I have been accepted to a faculty-led study abroad program at the University of Maryland; "Brazil: From Africa to South America- The Afro-Brazilian Experience." This trip is a vital part of a course in which I am currently enrolled, consisting of specialized lectures on topics ranging from African-Brazilian history to Poverty and Leadership.
My current research interests are centered in the various Afro-Latin cultures and experiences. During my four months abroad studying in Costa Rica, I was afforded the opportunity to interact closely with the Afro-Latinos living in the Caribbean province of LÃmon, which served as the launching point of my hands-on research in this area. While I gained valuable knowledge about Afro-Latin cultures in Central America, I have not yet had the opportunity to explore those of South American countries and people. This trip is especially important to me because I stand to gain further understanding and insight to the surrounding cultures of my family's homeland--Guyana, which is the sole Caribbean country in the Latin dominated South American continent.
What I am requesting is not solely your support and encouragement, but also monetary contributions to cover my program fee of $2500. This fee covers air and ground transportation, touring, lodging, travel insurance, study abroad fees, meals, and special events. Of this total, I have earned $500 via a University of Maryland Office of Diversity and Inclusion scholarship. Your support is appreciated and contributions of any amount will greatly add to the fulfillment of this endeavor. Gracias,D. Nandi McCammon
