Nawi 4 Malawi

Donation protected
#Nawi4Malawi   We are fundraising £4,000 for Kachipanda village in the district of Dedza, Malawi which was badly hit by Cyclone Idai on 14th of March. Thousands are struggling to meet their basic needs because of food shortages and a lack of access to clean water which is causing major risks to people's health.      Nawi Collective is a black womxn and non-binary femmes vocal collective based in London. We sing for justice, sing to reclaim our time and raise our voices to honour our ancestors. We are very passionate about showing solidarity with groups and causes dear to us.   Big international aids agencies have yet to reach Kachipanda and members of our choir have friends living in the village who are in need of food and basic sanitation.    Khama, a community organiser and Managing Director of Warmheart Travels In Malawi says, "The land and livestock farming has been badly affected and much of the infrastructure has been damaged. The village is regularly hit by food shortages, mainly at this time of the year so the damage to our grain brings great cause for concern. It isn't just growing crops that have been lost, but also all of the food storage reserved for times of need. Thousands of people are having to defecate in the open and waterborne diseases like cholera have started to spread, putting lives at risk. Swamps are breeding grounds, putting people at risk of contracting malaria."   Donating money to folks we know on the ground means that the village has freedom and autonomy over how the money is spent and can make swift changes on the ground. In a world where climate injustice is rooted in colonialism and global inequalities, this is the solidarity we in Western societies owe the people of Kachipanda. Kachipanda Village needs at least £4,000 to buy enough supplies to last whilst they wait to be able to plant sustainable crops.    Please help us spread the word by sharing with friends and family & get in touch via [email redacted] if you want to help with fundraising efforts.   Let's do this! *********** The Kachipanda Village committee has costed up resources that they will need to ensure that needs are met. Here is a list of what will be bought (in US $): 100 x 50kg bags of maize @ $20/bag 10 x 50kg bags of rice @ $40/bag 10 x 50kg bags of beans @ $70/bag 20 x Cartons of soap @ $15/carton 10 x Bales of sugar @ $25/bale 10 x Bales of salt @ $15/bale 20 litres of cooking oil @ $5/litre Medicine - $300 Hygiene kits - $200 Thick plastic sheeting for shelter - $500 Buckets and pots - $300 Sheridan (the nawi member who set up the crowd funder) will transfer money over to Khama Chowa (who is a village elder, community leader and has been facilitating the village's relief efforts) via Western Union transfer as soon as we raise the £4,000.
