New PolySea: Transforming Plastic Waste into Educational Opportunities
Help us clean Bali’s beaches, recycle plastic waste, and donate eco-friendly chess sets to schools!
Hi, we’re Bruno and Yael, and we’re on a mission to tackle plastic pollution in Bali while supporting education for thousands of students.
Bali’s beaches are drowning in plastic waste, harming marine life and ecosystems. At the same time, many schools lack resources to provide students with tools for learning and creativity. That’s why we started New PolySea, a project that turns plastic waste into something beautiful and meaningful: eco-friendly chess sets for schools.
The Problem:
- Plastic Pollution: Bali’s beaches are overwhelmed with plastic waste, especially HDPE and PP plastics, which take hundreds of years to decompose.
- Lack of Educational Resources: Many schools in Bali don’t have access to tools that encourage critical thinking and creativity, like chess sets.
The Solution:
New PolySea is a two-part solution:
1. Clean Bali’s Beaches: We organize beach clean-ups to collect plastic waste, using 2,000+ kgs of PP/HDPE. As part of our core program, we also collect detailed data on the amount and types of plastic (e.g., HDPE, PP, PET) and their possible origins, providing valuable insights into the sources and composition of marine plastic pollution.
2. Recycle and Educate: We recycle the plastic into 12,500 chess sets and donate them to 2,500 elementary schools across Bali, reaching 400,000+ students. Each chess set symbolizes hope, transforming waste into a tool for learning and growth.
How Your Support Helps:
With your help, we can:
- Clean Bali’s Beaches: Remove 2,000+ kgs of HDPE/PP plastic waste, protecting marine life and ecosystems.
- Produce Chess Sets: Turn recycled plastic into durable, eco-friendly chess sets.
- Donate to Schools: Provide chess sets to schools, encouraging strategic thinking and creativity.
- Educate Students: Run workshops on environmental sustainability and the benefits of chess.
Our Goal:
Establishing a permanent base in Bali and building strong partnerships with local communities, schools, and organizations to ensure the long-term success and impact of New PolySea.
To successfully complete the first phase of the project, an initial budget of 50,000€ is required. This funding will cover:
- Space Rental: Securing a facility for plastic processing and chess set production.
- Machinery and Equipment: Purchasing or leasing machines for recycling and molding.
- Operational Costs: Logistics for beach clean-ups, volunteer coordination, and transportation of materials.
- Production Costs: Labour, quality control, and custom-designed molds for the chess sets.
- Distribution and Workshops: Delivering chess sets to schools and organizing educational sessions.
An additional 100,000€ over 4 years will allow us to achieve our full goal of producing 12,500 chess sets and creating a lasting impact in Bali’s communities.
Tax Considerations
As an individual based in Portugal, I am required to pay 10% tax to the Portuguese government for every donation received. This means that for every €100 donated, €10 will go toward taxes, and €90 will be directly allocated to the project. While this reduces the net amount available for the project, we are committed to transparency and ensuring that all funds are used responsibly and effectively.
Why Chess?
Chess is more than just a game, it’s a tool for education. It helps students develop:
- Critical Thinking: Planning and problem-solving skills.
- Creativity: Thinking outside the box.
- Confidence: Learning through play and competition.
By donating chess sets, we’re not just cleaning the environment, we’re empowering the next generation.
How You Can Help:
1. Donate: Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference.
2. Share: Spread the word on social media, WhatsApp, or email.
Our Vision for the Future:
This is just the beginning. With your support, we aim to:
- Expand to other regions.
- Create more educational tools from recycled materials.
- Inspire communities worldwide to turn waste into opportunity.
Join Us:
Together, we can turn plastic waste into a force for good. Let’s clean Bali’s beaches, empower students, and create a brighter future, one chess piece at a time.
