Nick's Nuckleheads

Donation protected
In May 2018, Nick Parins, unresponsive to treatment for pneumonia, was eventually and urgently sent to American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison where they discovered a tumor near his heart and a collapsed lung. Nick was quickly diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma. He remained in Madison for over a year where he continued to receive treatments. He entered remission with great probability for full recovery and returned home to Land O’ Lakes, WI this summer, eager to re-start his Junior year of high-school. However, despite frequent trips to Madison and continuing rounds of maintenance treatment, the Parins family recently found out Nick’s cancer is back. Doctors are now recommending a bone marrow transplant for him.

Since his initial diagnosis, Nick’s father, Kevin, has taken a leave of absence from his job and has not been able to return due to Nick’s medical condition. Kathi, Nick’s mother, continued to work as an on-line Global Client Liaison, but learned earlier this year that her job had been shipped off shore.

Nick is a 17 year-old student at Northland Pines High School in Eagle River, WI.  Nick is involved in community service; he volunteers at the Land O’ Lakes Library and he assists community organizations like the Chamber of Commerce. Nick is an exemplary student and a past participant in the SOAR charter school program. He has received leadership training and participated as a member of the Northland Pines Trap Team. Boy Scouts has also a big part of Nick’s life. He recently earned his Eagle Scout rank this Fall. When he is not participating in these activities, he enjoys hunting, fishing and trapping with his father. He hopes to someday meet Rick Riordan, his favorite author.

Nick, an only child, and his parents, who are Green Bay natives, are hoping the community will help spread the word about Be The Match, the international organization for bone marrow donors.  A bone marrow transplant takes a donor’s healthy blood-forming cells and puts them into the patient’s bloodstream, where they begin to grow and make healthy red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Patients receive high doses of chemotherapy to prepare their body for the transplant. The success of this process for Nick, of course, is dependent on finding a correct donor match. Becoming a donor is easy!  Just a simple cheek swab.  And if a match is made, donating your cells is often as easy as donating plasma.

YOU CAN BE A NUCKLEHEAD!  The family has rallied around Nick’s recovery, but the stay in Madison and medical expenses have caused financial hardships on the family.  Please consider supporting the Parins family with your monetary donation.  Join the movement; be one of Nick's Nuckleheads!

Additionally, tax-deductible donations over $250 will be accepted by St. Albert Catholic Church.  Checks can be mailed to:
