Help Dave reopen PanamaLab

Hey guys! My name is Dave, and I am raising money to purchase new equipment to reopen PanamaLab, a photo lab for the skateboarding community of Barcelona. ️

I moved to Barcelona five years ago to work with Calling All Skaters, a non-profit that is dedicated to serving skateboarding communities worldwide. I love skating and taking photos, and I strongly believe in the creative potential of skateboarders.

My dream when moving to Barcelona was to create a photo lab where skateboarders could explore the art of analog photography, be part of a rad community, and stay inspired. I received a lot of support and within a short time my dream became a reality, I opened PanamaLab in the Spring of 2018. It had a humble beginning in a handicapped bathroom converted to a dark room but it had everything I needed at the moment. Over the next two and a half years, the PanamaLab community grew. I was offering film developing, and workshops, collaborating on projects, getting to know amazing people, and inspiring one another. The vision was happening!

During this time I was running the lab with equipment suited for personal use, not for the running of a public lab. Those that know the field understand that developing by hand in tanks and scanning on a flatbed scanner is not the most cost or time-effective path for developing and scanning a large number of films. I knew that eventually, I would have to upgrade my equipment but at the time I simply offered the best service I could with the equipment I had.

In January 2021 Due to COVID and other factors, we closed our doors and PanamaLab was put on hold for a while. After COVID everyone's lives were thrown for a loop, and a lot of us were rethinking our life goals. For me these past two years have given me time to plan the future of PanamaLab, the dream is still alive. I plan to reopen the lab and by upgrading our equipment offer a more professional service than before.

This is why I have created this campaign, to raise funds to get the best equipment possible for the PanamaLab Community!

When I think about what kind of meaningful impact I can have on the skate community I think it will be through the vision of PanamaLab. To create a space where skateboarders can come, no matter their skill level, and be met by staff eager to help them discover and learn. By providing resources, expertise, and a healthy inspiring community many skaters will be able to develop their creativity through an experience that goes far beyond just dropping off their film to be developed.

How will PanamaLab function?

For the past 2 years, I have been working with a group of artists to create a cultural association and open a physical hub for creativity here in Barcelona that will be taking shape in 2023. This hub will be made up of multiple small businesses devoted to developing creativity in the skate scene, PanamaLab will be one of the businesses that make up this project. This space will function as a non-profit business, reinvesting all of the income back into the project itself to become self-sustainable with a long-term goal of being able to provide opportunities for skaters to work within a field they love.

Before we can rent a location and get rolling with this project my goal is to get the right equipment, master using the equipment to achieve optimal results, and build and train my staff team.

This is the reason I am extending the invitation to be a part of this project. I need your help to reach these goals!

How the raised funds will be used: The money raised will be used to purchase the two main pieces of machinery to run a professional photo lab. Below are some details about the equipment we are looking to purchase. (photo reference below)

(1st Priority) Film scanner - The machine that converts the developed negatives into positive digital images (what people want for viewing, sharing, and printing).

Fuji Frontier SP3000, Noritsu HS1800 or similar - $10,000 - $15,000

(2nd Priority) Film processor - The machine that develops the film (the main service a film lab offers).

Noritsu V50 or V30 Color Film Processor or similar - $10,000 - $15,000

Seems like a lot of money?

The prices of these machines are due to high demand because they are no longer manufactured. The prices vary because these machines can be hard to find in working order and usually need to be shipped.

The investment in quality equipment is key to the vision of the space, we want to offer the best possible resources to the skaters that come to PanamaLab.

¡Hola! Me llamo Dave, y estoy recaudando dinero para comprar nuevo equipo para reabrir PanamaLab, un laboratorio fotográfico para la comunidad de skate de Barcelona. ️

Me mudé a Barcelona hace cinco años para trabajar con Calling All Skaters, una organización sin ánimo de lucro que se dedica a servir a las comunidades skaters de todo el mundo. Me encanta patinar y hacer fotos, y creo firmemente en el potencial creativo de los skaters.

Mi sueño cuando me mudé a Barcelona era crear un laboratorio fotográfico donde los skaters pudieran explorar el arte de la fotografía analógica, formar parte de una comunidad y mantenerse inspirados. Recibí mucho apoyo y en poco tiempo mi sueño se hizo realidad, abrí PanamaLab en la primavera del 2018. Tuvo un comienzo humilde en un baño para discapacitados convertido en un cuarto oscuro, pero tenía todo lo que necesitaba en ese momento. Durante los siguientes dos años y medio, la comunidad de PanamaLab creció. Estaba ofreciendo revelado de carretes, y talleres, colaborando en proyectos, conociendo gente increíble e inspirándose mutuamente. La visión se estaba haciendo realidad.

Durante este tiempo, yo dirigía el laboratorio con equipos adecuados para uso personal, no para el funcionamiento de un laboratorio público. Los que conocen el sector saben que revelar a mano en tanques y escanear en un escáner flatbed no es lo más rentable ni lo más rápido para revelar y escanear un gran número de carretes. Sabía que, con el tiempo, tendría que actualizar mi equipo, pero en aquel momento simplemente ofrecía el mejor servicio que podía con el equipo que tenía.

En enero de 2021, debido a COVID y otros factores, cerramos nuestras puertas y PanamaLab fue puesto en pausa por un tiempo. Después de COVID las vidas de todos fueron sacudidas, y muchos de nosotros empezamos a repensar nuestros objetivos de vida. Para mí, estos dos últimos años me han dado el tiempo para planificar el futuro de PanamaLab, así que el sueño sigue vivo. Planeo reabrir el laboratorio y, mediante la actualización de nuestros equipos, ofrecer un servicio más profesional que antes.

Es por eso que he creado esta campaña, ¡para recaudar fondos para conseguir el mejor equipo posible para la Comunidad de PanamaLab!

Cuando pienso en qué tipo de impacto significativo puedo tener en la comunidad de skate creo que será a través de la visión de PanamaLab. Crear un espacio donde los skaters puedan venir, sin importar su nivel de habilidad y ser recibidos por personal motivado para ayudarles a descubrir y aprender. Proporcionando recursos, experiencia y una comunidad sana e inspiradora, muchos skaters podrán desarrollar su creatividad mucho más allá de dejar su carreta para que lo revelen.

¿Cómo funcionará PanamaLab?

Durante los últimos 2 años, he estado trabajando con un grupo de artistas para crear una asociación cultural y abrir un centro físico para la creatividad aquí en Barcelona que tomará forma en 2023. Este hub estará formado por múltiples pequeñas empresas dedicadas a desarrollar la creatividad en la escena del skate, PanamaLab será una de las empresas que conformen este proyecto. Este espacio funcionará como un negocio sin fines de lucro, reinvirtiendo todos los ingresos de nuevo en el propio proyecto para llegar a ser auto-sostenible con el objetivo a largo plazo de ser capaz de proporcionar oportunidades para que los skaters trabajen dentro de un campo que aman.

Antes de poder alquilar un local y poner en marcha este proyecto, mi objetivo es conseguir el equipo adecuado, dominar el uso del equipo para lograr resultados óptimos, y crear y formar a mi equipo de personal.

Esta es la razón por la que te invito a formar parte de este proyecto. Necesito tu ayuda para alcanzar estos objetivos.

Cómo se utilizarán los fondos recaudados: El dinero recaudado se utilizará para comprar las dos piezas principales de maquinaria para hacer funcionar un laboratorio fotográfico profesional. (1ª Prioridad) Escáner de negativos - La máquina que convierte los negativos revelados en imágenes digitales positivas (lo que la gente quiere para ver, compartir e imprimir).

(2ª Prioridad) Procesadora de película en color - La máquina que revela el carrete (el principal servicio que ofrece un laboratorio fotográfico).

Procesador de película en color Noritsu V50 o V30 o similar - $10.000 - $15.000

¿Te parece mucho dinero?

Los precios de estas máquinas se deben a su gran demanda porque ya no se fabrican. Los precios varían porque estas máquinas pueden ser difíciles de encontrar en estado de funcionamiento y normalmente hay que enviarlas.

La inversión en equipos de calidad es clave para la visión del espacio, queremos ofrecer los mejores recursos posibles a los skaters que vienen a PanamaLab.
