How this began...
In 2019 we successfully fundraised for the movie "Flood: The Overdose Epidemic in Canada". Then COVID-19 began and drug policy changes and deaths began to grow at an even more alarming rate. Where this became most apparent is in the province of Alberta. In August 2020, the Alberta government took the first big action of many to dismantle harm reduction in the province. Hearing of this we set out to follow up in November 2020. Since then we have done frequent trips back and forth between Ontario and Alberta to properly tell this story to the best of our abilities.
What do we need the money for?
The money we raise will go towards the last trip we make out to Alberta this summer. For three years now we have saved up money of our own to make trips back and forth but as this film became more and more complicated to make and the process became longer and longer the funds have run out. We are still very committed to finishing the documentary. The difference between this film and the last one is that "Flood" took 9 months to make from start to finish whereas this has been a three-year on-and-off process. The money we raised for "Flood" paid for our 12-day trip out west to Calgary and Vancouver. The money we raise for Paper Cuts will go toward the final 2-3 week trip we make to Alberta in which we will conduct interviews all around the province.
What is happening in Alberta?
The current situation in Alberta is complicated and messy. Something that may help explain some of what is going on is an article I wrote when the trailer for the film was released called Alberta’s Drug Policy Crisis
What is Paper Cuts?
Paper Cuts is the title of the feature-length documentary that we have been working on, on and off, since 2020. It is set to release this year and follows the changes to drug policy and harm reduction that the Alberta government has made since the closure of ARCHES (the most accessed supervised consumption site in Canada that was closed in August 2020).
