THE KANUNGU HUMANIST PRIMARY SCHOOL is a recently opened, not for profit humanist school situated in southwestern corner of Uganda. It is a remote and rural region of extreme poverty and hardship.
Hope for the future of the children of Kanungu is through education. Our school offers them this hope with the principles of humanism alongside the national curriculum.
The school was founded and is run by a remarkable, local Humanist, Robert Magara, who was inspired to seek Humanist inspiration after abandoning his Catholic faith and reading Richard Dawkins' book, 'The God Delusion', following the terrible massacre of 780 people, mainly women and children in Kanungu in 2000 at the hands of "religious" cult leaders.
We have been helped so far by the kindness of people who have trusted us and shared the journey with us to see their generosity put to use in our endeavours this past year.
More recently, we have been accepted by the renowned 'Uganda Humanist Schools Trust' (UK)
We, at last, opened our doors to the children of Kanungu in March 2021 after a year’s Covid-19 lockdown, while we almost completed the school buildings after 3 years of fund-raising, planning and sheer hard work on the part of Robert Magara on the ground in Kanungu.
The local community are thrilled with the new humanist school and eager to enrol their children from Nursery through to Secondary school age.
NURSERY (Pre-School):
This has been a great wish of the community for many years!
Now parents have a safe place to leave their little ones in the morning while they can tend to their crops for selling in the market or go off to their work in the tea plantation.
A tiny, dusty homestead far from town is no life for children; at the Nursery they can have a breakfast with their little friends before starting an exciting day. They will have a good lunch too in a safe and productive environment.
We have a brand-new, 3 rooms nursery block but we don't have yet is the FUN!
Most of our children will never have seen, let alone played with, a real toy; or seen the joy of primary colours.
This is an appeal to raise funds for toys, games and early learning play equipment for the Nursery and younger Primary classes.
We have green space for swings, slides and other activity/play equipment which they would have never seen before!
We need building-toys to help the children explore their creativity, imagination and dexterity.
Most of all we need COLOURS AND FUN to make the school and learning environment a joyous one.
My own experience of presenting a child with a toy for the very first time in this environment is that they instinctively know exactly how to play with it. Whether it be a stack of coloured bricks or a fluffy bear, all children react the same whatever their culture. There will always be a smile!
THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF THE JOURNEY! COME ALONG WITH US!
Help us give the children of Kanungu the chance of an education, which could lead to further education and a career. Ultimately this helps the future of the whole community to grow in dignity and health after the tragedy it endured.
Help us keep the children safe. Help us allow them to be educated with evidence based learning, critical thinking and not almost exclusively by church funded schools.
We need help and support from the world-wide community of Humanists, Secularists and Free-Thinkers; support which churches give to “faith” schools; which the Government give to public schools.
Please help us get our supporters around the world to step-up and help get Humanist schools up and running and for Humanism to become accepted by the vulnerable people of rural Africa and replace the superstitions and imported religious dogmas that have dominated the beautiful people of this continent for far too many centuries!
This is more than just education; it is kindness, basic humanity, compassion and common decency flying in the face of indoctrination and subjugation and, as before, a new humanity can flourish from the heart of sub-Saharan Africa.
IT IS THE FUTURE.
Thank you.
