Hello everyone. My name is Laura Mills and I am Richard Faithfull's older sister. On July 28, 2016 Richie was riding his skateboard when he was struck from behind by a distracted driver. The car was going at least 40 MPH. If the driver hadn’t called the police my little brother would have probably died from internal bleeding. The car hit him in the back, propelling him into the windshield, and then he flew up and landed on the ground face first. When he arrived at the hospital they rushed him into surgery where he had to have his spleen removed, repair a lacerated colon, and a lacerated liver. They also had to staple the back of his scalp back onto his skull. He suffered many fractures from the top of his cervical spine down to his lumbar spine. He has broken ribs which may have been what caused both of his lungs to be punctured. An infection has developed in his lungs and he is currently fighting pneumonia. Due to the infection he is unable to receive two needed MRI’s at this time. One for his brain and one for his spine. Because of this we are unable to determine possible traumatic brain injuries that he may have. We have no idea how long his recovery will take or what other complications may still arise.
At only 25 years old Richie is lucky to be alive. He is still in the intensive care unit at a hospital in Charlotte, NC. He recently moved from Long Island, NY to NC in order to room with some of his high school friends. He is the third child out of four children. He is also an amazing Uncle to my two young children. My five year old daughter is very concerned about her Uncle and wants to make sure that he will be able to play with her and her younger brother again one day. My brother is one of the kindest people that I know. He doesn't have a judgmental bone in his body and is extremely loyal. He would help and listen to anyone who needed him. He has always made us laugh and has always had such a positive outlook on things. This tragedy has devastated our family and his friends. It seems so unfair that something like this could happen to such a good and young person with his whole life ahead of him.
My parents still live in NY and had to fly out right away to care for Richie. He will eventually have to move back to my parent’s home to recover. He is a young man who was just starting his independent life in NC. He has no money or assets to help with expenses. My parents are still helping to put our youngest brother through college. The financial stress from the medical expenses could be crushing! Please help us to lessen the financial burden of this tragedy for Richie and our parents. It will be a long road to recovery. We are also asking for prayers. Please share my brother’s story with others so that we can lessen this burden and my parents can focus on their son’s recovery. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any help that you could provide. I will do my best to update you all as often as possible on my brother’s progress.
