Worked hard for 34 years…
Now insurance can’t help in his time of need
PLEASE HELP OUR FRIEND RICK WITH MEDICAL BILLS
Rick’s story
Rick Girkin worked as a phone technician for 34 years. He was a dedicated worker whose high spirits and sense of humor always kept his coworkers laughing.
In January 2014, Rick underwent neck surgery (cervical fusion). He never walked out of the hospital and is now a wheelchair-bound ventilator-dependent quadriplegic.
Even in his condition, Rick has maintained his upbeat and positive outlook on life and is a true inspiration to his family and friends.
Current situation
For Rick, his wife Nancy and son Rich, life is a daily challenge. Rick requires 24-hour supervision and care. He breathes through a tracheostomy tube and is fed through a G-tube. At night, he is on a ventilator and receives tube feedings through a pump and gastrostomy tube in his stomach.
Nancy takes him to therapy every day in their van outfitted with a special lift. Their home also needed to be renovated to accommodate Rick, his wheelchair and other equipment. (They spent their retirement money for these necessary expenses.)
Why help is needed now
As of July 1, 2016, Rick’s COBRA insurance will be terminated because he will be eligible for Medicare. Medicare does not cover shift nursing care.
Sadly, he is not eligible for Medicaid because, after working hard all his life, Rick’s wages were just slightly over the limit to qualify. Rick and Nancy are left with no way to pay for Rick’s nursing care, which costs between 400.00 to 500.00 per shift.
