Protecting the Dark Skies on the Isle of Rum

The Isle of Rum has a wealth of wildlife and incredible untouched landscapes. Our community is looking to protect these via an International Dark Sky Application which we hope to submit by December 2023.

With sponsorship via Cosmos Planterium, we have the chance to protect our island's dark skies and the wildlife that lives within, especially beneficial to our 120,000 Manx Shearwaters and countless sea birds that nest here during the Spring and Summer.

With our application to the IDA, we will see long-term benefits to the community via more year-round opportunities, chances to create more employment and promote astro-tourism and bring extra visitors to the island through the 'off season'.

We are fundraising for the following:

Sky Camera system whereby anyone can live stream our night sky from anywhere in the world

Meteor Detection Camera

A range of telescopes permanently based for visitor and community use all year round

Weather Station for all to assess our Dark Skies before visiting/hiking/stargazing
