Surgery for Sammy the Owl

Donation protected
Sammy (pictured in the middle) is one of our adorable non-releasable Eastern Screech Owls. He lives with two females, Scooter and Oscar. They all live at the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove  because they were hit by cars and were all blinded in one eye. Recently, we noticed that Sammy wasn't opening his good eye even when we had staff holding him. We took him to the vet and discovered he has a tumor attached to his reproductive organ. The only way that he will survive is if that tumor is removed. It is a tricky surgery as Sammy is an older owl and there are risks with going under anesthesia. He has been such an amazing animal ambassador for the center and has met over a thousand school children over the past few years. Not only has he inspired kids to appreciate birds and the natural world, he also is a favorite guest at weddings as a meet and greet bird after the ceremony. Many of these guests have never seen an owl up close and end up coming back just to visit him.

For all these reasons, we think that Sammy still has people to inspire. All of the funds will go towards his surgery which is scheduled on Monday, 1/22/18. I am the Assistant Director and am working directly with the center to cover all costs. If we go over the amount, the funds will go towards taking care of our other non-releasable birds: Sammy, Scooter (Eastern Screech Owls); Sherlock (Barred Owl), Oden (Great Horned Owl); Hopper (Broad-winged Hawk); and Conrad (Blue Jay). Pictured below is Sammy (Grey) on the left and Scooter (Red) on the right.

The mission of the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove is to educate and inspire people to cherish and protect the natural world, by preserving Audubon’s artistic, scientific, and historic legacy and celebrating the conservation movement he inspired while serving the mission of the National Audubon Society (NAS), “to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity.”
