Sarah Finds Hope in Texas

Sarah and Andy have touched so many people's lives with their friendship and love for life. Even on my worst days, I could not help but smile when I was with Sarah. As a wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend, Sarah sees the best in people and has an amazing energy that is contagious. Just in January her family and mine were sitting by a pool together in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It is still so surreal to me that she has cancer and is now fighting for her life.
Sarah's specialized cancer treatment requires monthly travel from Ohio to Texas. The treatment is not covered by insurance and her family has no choice but to incur the travel costs so that she receives the care she needs. The travel expenses will impact their finances even harder once she goes on unpaid medical leave - a very real possibility that may happen in June.
My goal is to raise money to help cover their travel expenses. This way Sarah and Andy can focus on healing and enjoying time with family without having to worry about expenses. Any additional funds we raise will go into Hank's college fund.
Sarah has intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, which is another way of saying she has bile duct cancer in her liver. It's a rare cancer that strikes 1 in 100,000 people and it's difficult to treat because the symptoms don't appear until the cancer is far advanced. Unfortunately, her cancer is inoperable because of the size and location of the tumor and a transplant is also not an option. She and Andy have been going nonstop trying different treatments, researching options, getting second and third opinions. It has been hell to watch from the sidelines, and we have all wanted to help. Now that opportunity has come.
Sarah has been accepted into a clinical trial at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. Her treatment requires her and Andy to travel to Houston from Cleveland 1-2 times every month. For the foreseeable future, she and Andy will spend an average of $2,000 every month on plane tickets, hotels, rental vehicles, etc. These costs will add up quickly - especially for a single-income family.
Things may be tough right now but it has not weakened Sarah's spirit or hampered her courage to fight the cancer.
Please join me in helping Sarah, Andy and their two-year old son, Hank.
