Save Our Addy

We are a community-owned organisation, known locally as “The Addy”.  We are located on the Warwick Estate, a highly deprived and isolated ex-mining community, in West Yorkshire.   We have been here since 1972, originally set up by local volunteers to provide a safe place for the children to play (and to keep them out of the quarry).    We have a building for indoor activities and a large outdoor adventure play area – most of the equipment/materials are donated; constructed and maintained by local companies and volunteers.

Our main project has always been free, open-access adventure play for children and young people.  But in the last 10 years we have expanded provision to help compensate for the closure of other local community venues. We now run activities for everyone - toddlers, children and their families, those with additional needs, young people, unemployed people and pensioners.

We have managed to cover the costs of all our work for the past nine years through a combination of Lottery and other grants, trading income/contracts and fundraising efforts.  However, our sources of continuation grant funding, which we will need from Spring 2021, have now been delayed by the COVID 19 pandemic; this, together with the loss of trading income from our café and room hire revenue has left us in a very vulnerable financial position.   We are very much hoping you will be able to help us with this (in any way you can) so we can continue to deliver much needed services and activities for our community.
