Support Plymouth's Fish Market

Donation protected
We are asking for your help to reinstate a fish market in Plymouth.

The Plymouth fish market closed unexpectedly in May this year. The market was an integral part of Plymouth’s heritage and an essential component in ensuring the long-term sustainability of Plymouth’s fishing industry. In particular the market ensured top quality day-boat fish could reach merchants on the fish quay and associated retailers within hours of fish being landed.

Currently without a market fish is still being landed into Plymouth but is being transported by road to Brixham and Newlyn for 1st sale, before returning to Plymouth for 2nd sale to retailers. This increases the carbon footprint of local fish and has approximately doubled costs to fishermen who are now paying two lots of landing fees and transport costs.

Reinstating the fish market will not only help fishermen and associated businesses but also the wider local economy and the social structures associated with fishing.
The new market could create up to 20 jobs and ensure top quality local fish can continue to be enjoyed by everyone in Plymouth.

Making a living as a fishermen is not easy, but it’s something that’s an essential part of our heritage – especially as an island nation. And if we want that heritage to continue, we need to support local markets.

Plymouth City Council and Sutton Harbour company have agreed to help with the production of a feasiblity study / business plan to determine what steps are needed to create a market in the short term and what a sustainable market structure would look like in the long-term. PFSA need to contribute financially to this study and we need to fund someone to lead development of this work.

Reinstating the fish market will require much more than £50,000. Our desire is to create a market that supports the local community. Please get in touch if you would like to be invovled. The first £50,000 is to help us create a detailed business case and pay somenone to lead this work for the PFSA.

All donors can come down to the quay, visit RG Seafoods or Rex Down and claim their free Fishes of Plymouth poster.

Thanks so much for your support.
