Sustainability for a black activist and organizer
Hey y’all,
As many of you know, I was arrested at the protest on Friday, May 30th and am being charged with unlawful entry, leaving a potential misdemeanor on my record and the possibility of 180 days in jail.
Upon my release, my friends and I created a [dis]organization, Feed The Need, a black queer woman created group centering the inclusion, safety, and comfort of black and brown TGNC folks of all sizes and experiences. We’ve been collecting and distributing protest supplies &first aid both directly to people on the front lines at the protests and to small groups within our community, as well as providing financial gifts to black folks, shelters, and organizations in our community.
The purpose in reaching out is to ask for my own needs to be fed as well. As a black artist, activist, and organizer, I dedicate much of my time, energy, and finances into the community all year round. And sometimes I have to remind myself that I am of the community as well.
I am looking to raise $10,000.
The money will be allocated as such:
$500- legal fees. Through a friend, I was able to find a black lawyer to represent me. I will also be posting the link to his book if you would like to support a black lawyer. My court date is August 28th. So save that date.
$3k- vehicle. One of my biggest expenses in the past month of organizing has been ubering to and from our HQ and into the city from hyattsville for protests. This would lift a major ongoing financial burden and gives me the opportunity to be more accessible to help others.
$3K- FTN&Operation Consent. Im in the first stages of planning the next Operation Consent, an exhibition with the mission to transform a rape culture society to a culture of consent for August 27th. So save that date too. Organizing is not free or cheap. Since 2015 I’ve organized and self funded 10 free exhibitions and would like to maintain that accessibility to the community. As FTN expands our vision to aid the community, we need space and resources. My goal is to find us space to occupy full time.
$3500- Rent&booth rental. My place of employment prepandemic does not offer a safe space for me to operate as a black being in a white dominant space and with unemployment coming to an end at the end of July, this will assist me in paying 2 months rent to ensure stability while I continue my work. As I move into working for myself as a hairstylist, this will help with the start up costs for booth rental and supplies.
being able to have this kickstart on sustainability helps me to get myself back in therapy, afford groceries, art supplies, and music equipment while fixing my credit and paying my bills.
Thank you for taking time to read this and entrusting me with the work thus far.
