Sending Smiles to Haiti

My name is Laura Phelps, I am a dentist in Mt. Airy, NC. I would not be a dentist today had it not been for the time I spent in the Amazon, Brazil while in college. It was there I witnessed first hand the extensive need for dentistry in their remote villages. After this experience and seeing the impact dentistry made in those people's lives, God moved me to change my college major from communications to biology and apply for dental school. I am reminded of this passion for helping others and God calling me to serve him through dentistry when I see the simple black ring I purchased from one of the locals while in brazil. I wear it everyday as a constant reminder to serve others.
In April of 2015, I was given the amazing privilege of joining a medical team on a mission trip to Haiti. I was truly humbled by learning that there are only three dentists in Haiti for every 100,000 residents and by seeing the widespread devastation and poverty in this
country that affects people in all walks of life. Thanks to the support of many generous sponsors, in February of 2016, the dental team was able to grow and help patients exponentially. Recently Haiti suffered another tremendous tragedy with the effects of Hurricane Matthew. Death, disease, and destruction currently shadow the country of Haiti. In February 2017, we will be sending another team to help serve the people of Haiti.
My passion for serving others through dentistry has now lead me to start a non-profit organization called “Sending Smiles”. This organization will not just go towards providing dental care to those in need internationally, but also to help those right here in our community receive the dental care they need. All funds will first go towards supporting the Haiti dental team in supplies, transportation, and lodging. Additional funds will go towards future dental missions in the community and globally. Once enough funding is raised, we will purchase mobile dental units that will help treat those in nursing homes and more remote locations.
So with the holidays coming up what better way to raise money than through a Christmas party! This will be a great chance to celebrate the Christmas season in fun sweaters, dancing the night away, and singing your favorite christmas songs. Complimentary light refreshments and select beverages will be available as well as big ticket door prizes for just coming out and having a good time. Everyone at the party will also have the opportunity to be entered into a drawing for $500 cash! We hope everyone can get in the spirit and give towards an amazing cause all while celebrating the holidays with your friends and family.
We sincerely appreciate any donation towards Sending Smiles and sending dentistry to those in need. I have seen the tears from people who have suffered for numerous years in pain because they do not have the access to dental care. To be able to alleviate their pain makes every small sacrifice we make worthwhile. The people of Haiti count on our sponsors and volunteers, and I hope you will join us in making a difference in their lives.
