EMERGENCY STATEMENT AND GOALS:
In this devastating time where Kwazulu-Natal ( a province in South Africa) burns, we must stay strong, stay safe and stay positive. Rebuild, regrow and flourish against mindless looting, political crossfire and anarchy.
We however plead with you not to forget the silent victims here. Even though this event was aggravated by human agenda, nature is once again suffering the consequences and will for many months to come, whilst all resources and attention are directed at the clean-up and recovery in the aftermath of the looting.
Shongweni Nature Reserve now faces new challenges, notwithstanding its struggle when all was peaceful. It’s future now hangs in the balance of being forgotten in the new focus of the regions political instability. With the South African economy terrorised and a food shortage predicted, we will see our magnificent herd of giraffe being targeted as a food resource. Everything we have worked for over the past two and half years is under threat – a threat of becoming invisible whilst all attention is directed to cleaning up after the mass looting.
Our jugular has been severed. No visitors, no income…..
We want to nurture Shongweni Nature Reserve into an emotional healing ground for the regions communities in the aftermath of these chaos. However, if all the work and people development we have been tirelessly striving towards over the over the past 3 years is completely undone, this space will to degrade as its biodiversity and infrastructure will be reduced to a mess. We have no funds, no resources and Shongweni’s heart will no longer receive the sustenance this growing systems requires so desperately.
We need your help more than ever, and send out an emergency appeal for donations:
1. This fragile natural space is not a priority in the broader community focus at present, and this will have drastic outcomes for Shongweni’s future if we cannot secure her place as a critical gear in the rebuild of KwaZulu-Natal
2. We need to protect Shongweni Nature Reserve so she may be the healing ground for the people during this critical and very sensitive time
3. Allow us to access vital resources to re-establish crucial pillars of work and safeguard the future of Conservation Guardians and our work for South African’s irreplaceable wildlife
