The ask...
We are writing you to ask if you can make a donation towards a fund for Derek, Gabe and Silas, to help out with Derek’s living expenses and home care needs, and/or to assist with funeral arrangements. Whether you can give $25 or $2500, it will be greatly appreciated and will help immensely.
If you would like to donate to something in particular, such as a college fund for the boys, 24X7 care or direclty please contact his sister Margot or one of his Care Share team members.
The story...
It’s been over three years since our friend Derek was diagnosed with an aggressive type of brain cancer called Glioblastoma. With the support of family and friends, and an incredible team of doctors, Derek has been engaged in a tough fight. Unfortunately, his most recent CT scan on June 11th showed significant tumor growth, and he has exhausted his treatment options. Sadly, Derek’s remaining time with us is limited as hospice has been called and he's fortunately still living at home where he wants to be.
Despite all of this, Derek continues to embrace life fully, if limited. He spends a lot of time with his family, especially his teenage boys--now 13 years old, and with good friends. If you’ve recently spent time with him you know the cancer and subsequent treatments are taking a huge toll. He struggles to find the words to express his thoughts, the entire right side of his body is numb, his eyesight is compromised and he needs assistance walking. As directed by him, he is being well taken care of in his home with both professional and personal help. He is taking advantage of Hospice services and is as comfortable as he can be. But there is another toll as well. Derek is worried about the future.
He would very much like to have a financial gift to leave Gabe and Silas when he dies. Derek doesn’t have a lot of money, so paying for basic living expenses is often a challenge. So far the vast majority of his medical expenses have been covered, with the exception of some of his personal home care needs which are significant.
Thank you so much from all of us who love Derek, Gabe and Silas.
