Sixty for Sarah
As many of you know, we (Charlie, Jack and Pip) lost our mum in 2003 to breast cancer. As a child this was all quite hard to process, and I’m sure we all coped with it in different ways. However, in the wake of this traumatic event, something incredible happened. Dad ran.
We have such fond memories of Dad donning the pink, a yellow polka dot hankie on his head, and running marathon after marathon for Against Breast Cancer and raising a remarkable amount for such a good cause.
Now, Mum would have been sixty this year. Mum’s siblings, Dickon and Moo, came up with a lovely way to celebrate the memories we have of mum in what would have been her sixtieth year. They suggested that throughout the year, we do 60 things that remind us of her. Being typical Bergqvists, we took this a bit too seriously and decided to tie-in the sentimental with good old competition.
How about running 60kms on Mum’s 60th birthday?
Better still, how about running from where Mum was born in Dundee hospital, to where she grew up in Perth and make that 60kms?
And then off we went with this idea to the Scots in our family, the locals with all the knowledge, to find a path and make this thought a reality.
And so here we are now, with not just an idea, but a route, a date and… you guessed it a GoFundMe page.
So we’ve chosen Against Breast Cancer the same charity Dad ran for back in 2004.
Despite this epic seeming a bit heavy on the competitiveness rather than the sentimental, there is an element of sentimentality in the competitiveness. Watching Dad run so much for a broken heart was awe inspiring. Dad ran for mum, for love and for his family. He ran for any other family that is or could be affected by breast cancer. We want to do the same.
So please, give generously as this is a very personal mission us three are on.
