Socks for the Sick Non-Profit Goes National
Donation protected
My son, Barrett, participated locally in Invention Convention with Mitchell Nelson Elementary. He entered with a non-profit organization idea in memory of his late grandfather, who passed away from cancer, Multiple Myeloma. He was awarded "Best Individual" at the MTSU competition, and we have been invited to attend NATIONALS in Michigan at the Henry Ford Museum! Barrett is making history for Mitchell Nelson. They have never sent a participant to Nationals. Please consider donating or sponsoring him. More information is below.
What is Socks for the Sick?
In 2017, Barrett's grandfather, Big Daddy Ric, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. With research, he knew it was going to be a long battle. Ric wanted to share his story to help those also battling the disease. Knowing he would lose his hair and look rough some days, Ric wanted to update his followers by posting photos of his funky socks. People started to send him socks with all types of patterns. The funkier the design, the happier it made him. His friends connected with him and shared memories through the types of socks they sent. Socks, family, and friends were the source of his happiness until he passed away in April 2020.
When Barrett realized he could invent a business for the Invention Convention, he quickly went to work on "Socks for the Sick." A non-profit which would send socks to people spending extended amounts of time in the hospital or at home due to serious illness. With these socks, Barrett will include a joke. Through research, he found that laughing and smiling help relieve stress and aid recovery.
This Organization means so much to our family. We would love to get it started. There will be so many people at Nationals with the skills and knowledge to help jump-start the non-profit. We cannot pass up this opportunity. However, it is expensive. I would love Barrett to have his teachers, siblings, his dad and I, and grandmother there to support him.
Two of my sons have participated at invention convention for three years. Each year the same teachers have been there helping them. They come in before school multiple days a week to prepare. This year, school was canceled due to inclement weather, they still showed up to support him at MTSU for the local convention. I would love to raise enough money to help his three teachers come with us to Michigan at no cost to them.
Below is a breakdown of the cost to get Barrett and his supporters to the national competition.
