                      PRESENTATION OF THE MAIKUCHIGA FOUNDATION

The Maikuchiga Foundation is happy to present its work and thanks everyone for the support of its new projects of the year 2021, presented in the following document.

La fundación Maikuchiga presenta su trabajo y agradece a todos el apoyo de sus nuevos proyectos del año 2021, presentados en el siguiente documento


1. Creation of the foundation:

The name Maikuchiga is of Tikuna origin and means "History of Monkeys". The foundation was created as a rehabilitation center for primates confiscated from illegal trafficking in 2006 thanks to the work of Sara Bennet, American biologist, and Jhon Jairo Vasquez, originally from Mocagua, who dedicates his life to the protection of the monkeys.

El nombre Maikuchiga es de origen Tikuna (idioma indigena), significa  “Historia de Micos”. La fundación fue creada como centro de rehabilitación de primates decomisados del tráfico ilegal en 2006 gracias al trabajo de Sara Bennet, bióloga norteamericana, y Jhon Jairo Vasquez, originario de Mocagua (comunidad indigena) que dedica su vida a la protección de los micos.




2. Monkeys:

    The Woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha sp¹) is known as the environmental engineer of the Amazon. It is one of the most threatened and important species to be rehabilitated in the Amazon rainforest. According to the IUCN it is a critically endangered species, due to the massive destruction of its habitat, hunting and illegal pet trade. Also, victim of its beauty, it is often found in tourist centers to amuse people. This type of traffic impacts the wild population and puts the species more and more in danger.

    El mono churuco o choro (Lagothrix lagotricha sp¹) conocido como el ingeniero ambiental del Amazonas, es una de las especies más amenazadas e importante a rehabilitar en la selva Amazónica. Es una especie en peligro crítico de extinción según la UICN, debido a la destrucción masiva de su hábitat, a la caza y el comercio ilegal como mascota. También, víctima de su hermosura, se encuentra más y más en centro turístico para selfies y divertir a la gente, este tipo de tráfico impacta la población salvaje y pone la especie cada vez más en peligro. 





    The squirrel monkeys (Saimiris sp) and pichicos or tamarin (Leontocebus fuscicollis²) are some of the smallest species of the monkeys of the new world. Living in herds of about 100 individuals, they are very sociable and need to walk in groups to find food and protection from predators. Unfortunately, their small size makes them more vulnerable to pet trafficking. Far from their herd, without any protection and inadequate feeding, they get sick quickly and can transmit dangerous diseases to humans (zoonoses). The illegal market of this species produces a decrease in the population, with the risk of entering the list of threatened species in a short time.

    Los monos ardillas o saimiris (Saimiris sp) y pichicos o tamarino (Leontocebus fuscicollis²) son unas de las más pequeñas especies de los monos del nuevo mundo. Viviendo en manada hacia 100 individuos, son muy sociables y necesitan  andar en grupo para encontrar comida y protección contra los depredadores. Lastimosamente, su pequeño tamaño les hace más vulnerables al tráfico de mascotas. Lejos de su manada, sin ninguna protección y una alimentación inadecuada, se enferman rápidamente y pueden transmitir enfermedades peligrosas a los humanos (zoonosis). El mercado ilegal de esta especie produce una disminución de la población, con el riesgo de entrar, en poco tiempo, en la lista de especies amenazadas.

    Night monkey (Aotus nancymaae sp³), as its name suggests, is a monkey that only lives at night. They live in pairs with their children. The male takes care of the babies by carrying them on his back. Being animals kept as pets illegally, their normally nocturnal cycle is impacted by the coexistence with humans (day cycle) which causes irreversible and deadly impacts to the monkey. Also used in an inadequate and not controlled way in the studies of diseases (example: Malaria) its population is in danger, according to the red list of the IUCN its species is vulnerable

    Los monos nocturnos (Aotus nancymaae sp³), como le dice su nombre, es un mono que solo vive de noche. Viven en pareja con sus hijos. El macho cuida a los bebés llevándolos en su espalda. Siendo animales mantenido como mascota de manera ilegal, su ciclo normalmente nocturno está impactado por la convivencia con el humano (ciclo diurno) lo que provoca impactos  irreversibles y mortales para el mono. También usado de una forma inadecuada y no controlada en los estudios de enfermedades (ejemplo: Paludismo) su población está en peligro, según la lista roja del IUCN su especie es vulnerable.  





    The  saki monkey (Pithecia hirsuta sp⁴), are frequently seen jumping, some of them are quite long, especially when they are running, which has given rise to their common name of flying monkey. Like the night monkeys, they live as a family but it is not uncommon to find them walking with other species such as Howlers, Squirrels... The lack of data does not allow us to have a precise idea of the natural populations.

Los monos voladores o Saki (Pithecia hirsuta sp⁴), se les observa frecuentemente saltando, algunos de estos son bastante largos, especialmente cuando huyen asustados. Esta capacidad ha dado origen a su nombre común de volador. Al igual que los monos nocturnos, viven en familia pero no es raro encontrarlos caminando con otras especies como Aulladores, Saimiris... La falta de datos no permite tener una idea precisa de las poblaciones naturales.

     The capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus sp⁵), very famous for their intelligence. It is one of the species most seen by social networks for selfies and videos, dressed in human clothes or doing acrobatics for the pleasure of the spectators. Contrary to what the public thinks, this is a mistreatment of the animal and most of these animals come out of the illegal pet trade.  In addition, for a baby taken from the forest and used in a video, 9 others died at the hands of the traffickers. The natural state of the population is vulnerable according to the IUCN.

   Los monos capuchinos (Cebus capucinus sp⁵), son muy famoso por su habilidad. Es una de las especies más vista por las redes sociales en selfies y videos, vestidos con ropa humana o haciendo acrobacias para el placer de los espectadores. Al contrario de lo que piensa el público, eso es un maltrato del animal y la mayoría de estos animales salen del tráfico ilegal de mascotas.  Además, por un bebé sacado del bosque y utilizado en un video, 9 otros murieron entre los manos de los traficantes. El estado natural de la población es vulnerable según la IUCN.





   The howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus sp⁶), at first were not hunted by the indigenous communities who saw them as disgusting.
That changed because of the disappearance of the other species. Now they can be found in the markets as bushmeat and pets. Inevitably, in a short time, its population will be impacted. In addition, it is an essential species to the forest because it belongs to the "umbrella" species, such as the Churuco and Spider monkeys, which are the planters of the forest. Unfortunately, there are not enough studies on howlers to know the status of their population.   

    Los monos aulladores (Alouatta seniculus sp⁶), al principio no estuvieron cazados por las comunidades indígenas que los veían como malo y fétido.
Eso cambió por culpa de la desaparición de las otras especies. Ahora se puede encontrar en los mercados como carne o vendido como mascotas. Inevitablemente en poco tiempo, su población será impactada. Además, es una especie esencial a la selva porque pertenece a las especies “paraguas”, como el mono Churuco y Araña, son los sembradores del bosque. Lastimosamente, no hay suficientes estudios sobre los aulladores para conocer el estado de su población. 




3. Community:

   Mocagua is an indigenous community of Tikuna origin. The first indigenous people founded the community in 1917, and since then they continue to maintain the traditions. The community is located in the department of the Colombian Amazon and shares with other indigenous communities in the Quebrada Matama basin. Since 2003, they decided not to continue hunting endangered animal species, including primates such as the monkey churuco (Lagothrix lagotricha). Today, the Mocagua community leads the initiatives of conservation and recovery of native fauna, for that reason it is called "the community that protects its fauna and flora for the future".

    Mocagua es una comunidad indigena de origen Tikuna. Los primeros indígenas fundaron la comunidad en 1917, y desde entonces siguen manteniendo las tradiciones. La comunidad está ubicada en el departamento del Amazonas colombiano y comparte con otras comunidades indígenas la cuenca Quebrada Matama. Desde 2003, decidieron no seguir cazando las especies de animales amenazadas, incluyendo los primates como el mico churuco (Lagothrix lagotricha). Al día de hoy, la comunidad Mocagua lidera las iniciativas de conservación y recuperación de fauna nativa, por esa razón se hace llamar “la comunidad que protege su fauna y flora para el futuro”.

4. Objectives:

   Thanks to the commitment of its team, the Maikuchiga Foundation continues to rehabilitate, rescuing primates. In addition, the foundation is involved in education and awareness of the population. The foundation organizes talks and training sessions with purpose of raising awareness of environmental issues.
   
     Gracias al compromiso de su equipo, la fundación Maikuchiga sigue rehabilitando, rescatando a los primates. Además de eso, la fundación se involucra en la educación y la concienciación de la población. La fundación organiza charlas y jornadas formativas con propósito de concientizar sobre asuntos ambientales.


5. Project 2021: 

    Today the work of the Maikuchiga Foundation is more important than ever. Deforestation and fires that continue to grow out the survival of several species at risk. The foundation wants to improve its infrastructure and thus receive rescued animals in the best possible way. Furthermore, the foundation is aware of the importance of education for the protection of animals and needs to improve its infrastructure in this regard.

Hoy en día el trabajo de la fundación Maikuchiga tiene más importancia que nunca. La deforestación e incendios que siguen creciendo ponen en riesgo la sobrevivencia de varias especies. La fundación quiere mejorar sus infraestructuras y así recepcionar de la mejor manera a los animales rescatados. Además, la fundación está consciente de la importancia de la educación para la protección de los animales y necesita mejorar sus infraestructura en este sentido. 




     The foundation is seeking funds that will allow the construction of an education area, allowing visitors to observe the monkeys, without disturbing the rehabilitation of the non-human primates and avoiding physical contact with them. It will be a visitor's house built in a non-invasive way in the monkey's environment. With this visiting area, the Maikuchiga foundation wants to teach respect for the animals and remind visitors that monkeys are not pets, their living space has to be kept. 

    La fundación busca fondos que permitirán la construcción de una zona de educación, permitiendo a los visitantes de observar a los micos, sin perturbar la rehabilitación de los primates no humanos y evitando el contacto físico con ellos. Será una casa de visitantes construida de manera no invasiva en el medio ambiente de los micos. Con esta zona de visita, la fundación Maikuchiga quiere enseñar al respeto de los animales y recordar a los visitantes que los micos no son mascotas, su espacio de vida tiene que ser guardado.    

                                                                   
    In addition, to improve the entrance of the monkeys, which are always more numerous, the foundation needs to expand the infrastructure of its quarantines, which are not sufficient. The quarantine is a fundamental infrastructure for the rehabilitation of the monkeys. The animals that arrive at Maikuchiga are individuals that have suffered mistreatment, that arrive injured or sick. The quarantine allows to avoid contacts with the other pensioners of the center and to avoid injuring the weakest animals as well as to avoid the transmission of potentially contagious diseases.


    Además, para mejorar la entrada de los micos, siempre más numerosos, la fundación necesita ampliar la infraestructura de sus cuarentenas que no son suficientes. La cuarentena es una infraestructura fundamental para la rehabilitación de los micos. Los animales que llegan a Maikuchiga son individuos que han sufrido maltrato, que llegan heridos o enfermos. La cuarentena permite evitar contactos con los otros pensionarios del centro y evitar herir a los animales más débiles así como evitar la transmisión de enfermedades potencialmente contagiosas.
