Hi, I’m Clare and I need your help. After 6 weeks in isolation and a year of ill health I was diagnosed with mould poisoning and botulism earlier this year. Luckily, I was able to start the correct treatment and after a few months was finally well enough to return to my job part-time in August.
A mould specialist tracked down the likely source of infection as a new bed I had purchased a month before I became ill. The slats were covered with a white powdery substance which looked like sawdust but was identified as mould. A year on, the supplier is denying all responsibility and my insurance doesn’t cover mould remediation. The support that I thought I could rely on, wasn’t there when I needed it.
Unfortunately, over the course of over a year the mould had become airborne and spread throughout the entire house. I moved out for four months while the house underwent mould remediation treatment. Even after this, I was still unable to get rid of the mould in fabrics, in porous materials and electrical appliances. This included clothing, carpets, furniture and furnishings, sofas, beds and mattresses and appliances (oven, hoover, fridge, tumble dryer etc). Bleach and ozone will treat mould at a surface level, but if it becomes ingrained it is extremely hard to remove completely, like mildew in the shower that keeps coming back.
Bringing the house down to bare floorboards and cupboards has made a dramatic difference, and I’m finally able to live in my own home. It is finally great to be able to be through the worst of a what has been an incredibly challenging experience and slowly regain my health.
In so many respects I have been very lucky, however recovering and rebuilding my home is proving a big challenge. I am setting up this page to help me cope financially, and hopefully ease some of the worries during this challenging time. If you would like to help in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. Any monies received will cover the remediation works, medical costs, carpets, furniture and furnishings and electrical appliances and household goods that need to be replaced.
