Hello! My name is Francesca Abundo.
I grew up in a home where I recognised the privileges of receiving an education, having access to three meals a day and a family to share it with to be an inherent right. Yet, my parents were both raised in an environment where generational poverty flourishes. Every trip to their hometowns was characterized by the sight of malnourished children wandering through the city's bustling, congested roads with their siblings in one arm and purchasable goods for their families' livelihood in the other. This image haunted me to the core.
Every day since then I have made efforts in giving back to my local and international community. I took my first service trip in the summer of 2018 to Chiang Rai, Thailand where my peers and I taught English to young students and assisted in the exterior restoration of their school.
This summer, I made plans on travelling to the Philippines as a student volunteer. Then COVID-19 hit. Unable to make the trip, I still want to achieve something meaningful with my summer. I initially reached out to the White Cross Orphanage, a refuge to children born to indigent parents, mentally or physically incapacitated parents and or victims of rape to organise a school-supply drive. However, as COVID-19 continues to vigorously reverberate globally, this increasingly made the prospect of gathering supplies to ship internationally costly and unsafe. With that in mind, it would be above and beyond amazing if we could raise funds for educational and other essential supplies to be bought directly within the Philippines for the 99 children at the orphanage.
This project is very close to my heart. About one in five of the Philippines 106 million population are living in extreme poverty (less than $2 USD per day). Many of the children in the orphanage have been given a second chance at life, yet are once again suffering at the hands of something beyond their control. Please help make a difference
