Hello Friends,

At the end of October our dear friend Dearbhla Kelly was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Breast Cancer requiring immediate surgery (happening Dec 1st) followed most likely by a course of radiation (and possibly chemotherapy depending on post-op analyses). While Dearbhla’s prognosis is excellent, we created this GFM initiative to lend support for the unforeseen medical expenses as well as home expenses during time off work so our dear friend and family can tend fully to the journey ahead toward recovery and whole health. (FYl, All funds go directly to Dearbhla’s bank account.)

P.S. Below follows a recent newsletter that Dearbhla sent to her community which has more details.

“October 24, I was making lunch for Dave and I as part of our 17 th wedding anniversary celebration when the phone rang with unexpected news. The biopsy I had the previous week was positive for breast cancer.

I was stunned and waited for Dave to finish up some work before sharing the news. It was still our anniversary but the light had changed.

I have a good prognosis. I’m having surgery Friday, December 1st and will know a couple of weeks later if my lymph nodes are clear and the cancer is localized. At that point, I will also find out if I need chemotherapy.

At the end of last year I was diagnosed with an antibody deficiency which compromises my immune system. After numerous respiratory infections, I had seven months of immunoglobulin infusions and since August, monthly monoclonal antibody injections. I’m really hopeful that when my body no longer has to fight cancer, my immune system will be stronger and I won’t have almost constant respiratory infections.

Nobody wants or deserves cancer, and I feel very fortunate to have such a good prognosis. I have a wonderful medical team and a lot of support from friends and family.
