DONATIONS TO SUPPORT MR. FREEMAN MBOWE AND CO-ACCUSED LAWYERS

 

Tanzania has been known and regarded as an island of peace and tranquility until six years ago, when the Late John Magufuli and his CCM henchmen came into power, unleashing scathing and brutal attack on his political opponents. Being Magufuli’s critic meant a death sentence; Very many political critics disappeared without a trace, some were kidnapped, tortured, detained without trial. Thousands were charged with unbillable offenses, exiled and even assassinated. CHADEMA party members particularly lived under oppression and brutality and saw a sigh of relief when President Samia Hassan, took power upon Magufuli’s demise, not knowing things were about to take a wrong turn for the worse.

 

Tanzanian main opposition leader, and CHADEMA Chairman, Mr. Freeman Aikaeli Mbowe  (https:/Freeman Mbowe Twitter) was arbitrary arrested in the early morning hours of July 21, 2021, ahead of a planned party meeting on constitutional reform in Tanzania. Mr. Mbowe was arrested without a warrant, driven for 18 hours, over 1000 kilometers, from Mwanza to Dar es Salaam, and held in incommunicado detention for five (5) days. During this time, he was denied access to a lawyer and to his family and not informed of the charges he was facing. US voices concern at Tanzania arrest of opposition politician 

 

On July 26, he appeared before the Kisutu Magistrate Court where he was charged with conspiracy and the provision of funds to commit terrorist acts under Tanzania’s Economic and Organized Crime Control Act and its Prevention of Terrorism Act, respectively. Because he is facing terrorism-related charges, Mr. Mbowe was automatically denied the right to apply for bail. The totalitarian CCM Party and Samia Suluhu’s regime is in high gear to stifle democracy through arresting, jailing and killing of their political opponents.

 

Mr. Mbowe is currently languishing in Jail over trumped up charges with his co-accused. Nonetheless, a number of brave and brilliant Pro-bono Lawyers led by Peter Kibatala, have mounted extra ordinary defense which has pocked holes on the government’s case and exposed fake witnesses the government is staging. The legal team consists of:

 

Peter Kibatala, Dickson Matata, John Mallya, Nashon Nkungu, Evaresta Kisanga, Michael Lugina, Khadija Aron, Jeremiah Mtobesya, Maria Mushi, Sisty Aloyce, Paul Kisabo, Alex Massaba Seleman Matauka, Idd Msawanga, and Faraji Mangula.

 

These courageous men and women, have done an extraordinary job under very tough and dangerous conditions in defense of democracy. They have put aside their daily jobs (sources of income) in defense of democracy. We must be mindful of the fact that,  they have bills to pay and families to feed, they currently face dire financial situation. We are therefore requesting your support to raise funds for the legal team. Let’s join hands to defend democracy in Tanzania and give Mr. Mbowe an opportunity to win this case and finally join his family and colleagues to defend democracy. Every little amount counts.
