Surgeries for Baby Malakai

My sister became unexpectedly pregnant at 20 years old, and it has thrown a huge curveball in her life. She is trying to finish her college degree, working a part-time job at a grocery store, and had to move back in with our parents. On top of all of that, at her 20-week ultrasound anatomy scan, her baby boy was found to have a brain cyst in conjunction with a very rare heart defect in all 4 chambers of his heart, a condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, which causes oxygen-poor blood to flow out of the heart and into the rest of the body. He is safe right now while in utero, however, will require multiple immediate surgical procedures at birth.  

It is necessary for their safety that she stay at Children’s Hospital in Denver, CO being monitored daily by the pediatric cardiac specialists from 37 weeks on to deliver her baby boy. After birth, he will be having a stay in the NICU. Before 6 months of life, he will need a minimum of 2 heart surgeries to allow him to have a functioning heart.  

Not only will the surgeries be stressful and hard, but he will continually be needing check-ups and monitoring to ensure his heart is functioning normally.

This has placed great strain and stress on our family, and it is incredibly overwhelming to her and all of us.  

We are striving for the best life that we can offer and give this little boy as possible, but that will take a village and A LOT of support.
