Warm up the winter of Syrian kids in Gaziantep

Other volunteers and I came to Gaziantep at the beginning of July to participate in an European Solidarity Corps (ESC) project. The project involves working with disadvantaged children and youth.
We are based in the Akyol district, the so-called “Syrian neighborhood”. A lot of Syrian families welcomed us in their homes, sharing meals and cay all day long. Despite the fact that most of them live in precarious situations, often isolated in damaged houses with limited access to basic services, such as electrical and heating systems. Such utilities are, of course, much needed during the winter months, where temperatures in Gaziantep drop to under 0° degrees at night. Furthermore, the families are often very large; for example, Ahmed (7 years old) has 9 siblings.

Furthermore, the families are often very large; for example, Ahmed (7 years old) has 9 siblings.
The majority of the children of the district start working at a very early age in order to increase family income. They spend the remaining time on the streets. These conditions are worsened by the restricted access to the public education system. A growing number of associations are trying to change such a situation for the better. This is where Kids Rainbow steps in, an association where a lot of our Syrian friends collaborate in. It offers learning opportunities and a safe place for these children.
Therefore, besides our activities in the ESC project, we started to support Kids Rainbow’s and its mission. It amazed us how resilient these organisations are, in spite of the complex reality they face everyday.
During these months, the neighborhood has opened its doors to us. We have personally met not only the children and the families that participate in Kids Rainbow, but also the ones that don’t. In the past we already launched a little crowdfunding for the kids, but now we hope to give something more concrete. We would love to give present boxes to each child and their family to wish them a happy 2021!
Our desire is to reach 100 children. Here are some examples of what we can do with your help:
- Donating 15 euros will give one kid: one winter jacket, one warm sweater and sweatpants, a pair of socks.
- Donating 25 euros will give one kid: one winter jacket, one warm sweater and sweatpants, a pair of socks, a long levees shirt, one set of a hat, scarf and gloves.
- Donating 50 euros will give one kid: one winter jacket, one warm sweater and sweatpants, a pair of socks, a long levees shirt, one set of a hat, scarf and gloves and one pair of winter shoes.
- Adding only 5 or 10 euros to your donation will add to each box some school materials: notebooks, colors, papers and a book.
You can choose to donate according to the packages listed above, or to give anything you can.
Every donation is more than welcome.
