Welcome to PM Sport Foundation and thank you for your interest.
This is our story…
Tennis-In-Schools-Programme (TISP) by PMSPORTS FOUNDATION Ghana was initiated by Peter Mensah in March 2017 with the aim of introducing tennis to many school children in Ghana, West Africa. And to help educate parents and children about the positive impacts and opportunities from sports such as tennis to children and the nation at large.
Peter was born in Ghana and aged 8, joined his local tennis club as a ball boy. He quickly learnt how to play the game and qualified to represent Ghana in the under 14 West Africa ITF competition at the age of 12. That opened many opportunities for him. Peter continued to represent Ghana in many competitions and turned pro before becoming a coach in the United Kingdom.
Currently, Peter works as a Senior Performance Coach (LTA Level 4 ) and the Lead Coach at Paddington Sports Club in London. During the last 16 years of his coaching career, Peter has had the opportunity of working with most of the top British players including Sir Andy Murray, Jamie Murray, Heather Watson, Tim Henman and Virginia Wades providing coaching clinics and encouraging children to take up tennis. He has worked with many organisations promoting sports in the United Kingdom including Give It Your Max, City of Westminster, GLL (Greenwich Leisure Limited) Everyone Active and the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association).
Our plan for Ghana
Tennis-In-Schools-Programmes main aim is to introduce tennis to as many children in Ghana through its school link programs. We plan to inspire, establish opportunities and educate many children about the importance of sports and how it helps to develop social cohesion. Our initial goal is to introduce 5000 children each year to tennis, achieved through the school and club link plan. This will involve professional coaches in schools and at tennis venues all over the country. Many of the school children will be invited to join our club activities providing continuity and to help keep them in this wonderful game. We also plan to educate parents about the benefits of physical activity as well as future opportunities in sports for children who will eventually want to take up tennis as a career.
With this in mind, PM Sports in March 2017 started its pilot run programme in Ghana and with the help of the Ghana Education Service and Ghana Tennis Federation, we conducted many tennis clinics in the capital city Accra. We organised activities in schools and local clubs in the Greater Accra and Central Regions of Ghana and received very positive supports and demand for more from the communities. It was very successful to the point where we established regular weekly in-school coaching sessions which is still running.
Following our successful run, a resort outside Accra with good links to over 20 primary and secondary schools requested we use their facilities for our programme. The location is surrounded by many farming communities with very little or no sporting activities for its children. The facility boasts of 4 tennis courts (needing painting) at present with the intention of an additional 2 courts by end of 2020. This will be a great opportunity for us to establish and expand our programme in the central region of Ghana. We established a permanent tennis programme free of charge to all of the children in April 2018 which is still on going.
PMSPORTS positive contributions to the local communities and schools have yielded results and the Ghana Education Service has granted us full access into all schools in Ghana. We have agreed to start the TISP with selected schools in 3 out of the 10 regions in Ghana. We would then be in a better position to expand the number of schools and regions next year after recruiting and training more tennis coaches to supporting PE teachers.
The plan is to provide a 10 weekly in-schools coaching sessions for selected primary school class each term. At the end of the term, some of the children will be selected to represent their school during our Inter-schools-Tennis-Festivals with many more joining local clubs and newly created community venues we plan to establish.
How you can help
Running these programmes incurs a range of costs, including equipment, transportation, coaches salaries and refreshments for children. Since March 2017 Peter has been funding the programmes, with some assistance from members of his tennis clubs in London and 1 other partner. However in order to keep these programmes running and achieve the aim of introducing 5000 children a year to tennis, more support is needed.
Our Running Cost:
Coaches fees and transportation £3000 Administration and Promotional cost £800 Shipment cost £700 New equipment £1000 - £3000 (Including mini nets, mini rackets, lines, coaching aids) Facilities and other maintenance cost per week £50 And few other costs.
We need £10,000 to achieve our target of introducing 5000 children to Tennis this year. We anticipate some donations from few of the Private schools towards the running cost and we plan to solicit funds from organisations and hopefully from the International Tennis Federation developmental programme.
Please help by donating.
Best Regards
Peter Mensah.
