Terminated for supporting Palestine

My name is Tania Singh. I worked for a certain nurses union in Minnesota for the last 2.5 years. I loved my job and recently helped sexual assault nurse examiners form a union. I was applauded and praised for my dedication and skill as an organizer. I felt like I had earned enough respect and good will that if I took a stronger stance on a subject that most people do not understand, that they’ll ask questions instead of taking offense.

I had been watching the Israeli forces’ cruelty towards Palestinians all my life but specifically paid attention last year or so without the world noticing. So when the current crisis unfolded, I was quick to point out the hypocrisy of the west and Palestinians’ right to defend themselves and make themselves heard. Apparently I took a stance that’s way too unacceptable for a settler colonial nation. Someone took pictures and complained about my views.

I was put on paid admin leave for a week, and “investigated” where I was asked to explain my thought process and clarification for what I wrote. I told them that it was pretty self explanatory. And then a week after I was initially put on paid leave, I was terminated from my job in the union for “anti semitism” as it relates to my support of Palestine and Palestinian right to defend themselves against the occupier. I have zero regrets. Would 100% do it again.

They refused to pay out my earned benefit vacation time that amounts to around $5000.

I have filed a grievance but that’s a long process and it would be nice to win a legal victory against such punitive measures so they don’t become the new norm. Many people have faced these sorts of repercussions at work and school, and it’s setting a dangerous trend. We need to secure free speech to speak out for Palestine.
