The California Gold is a Lifeguard Ironman event based off of its Australian counter-part, the Coolangatta Gold. The 28 mile event consists of 5 legs (12 mile Surf ski, 6 mile run, 6 mile Paddle board, 2 mile Swim, 2 mile Run), with all paddle/swim legs going downwind.
The purpose of the event is to bring awareness of drowning, raise money toward junior lifeguard scholarships for low income youth and drowning prevention programs, as well as to embrace the athleticism, work ethic, and heroic spirit that Ben Carlson the Newport Beach Lifeguard who heroically lost his live while saving another embodied.
This year, the event will be on September 21, 2024. The goal is to raise $5000 which will be donated to lifeguard agencies at the events after party.
