Una cura per continuare a sognare

ITALIANO: Ciao, mi chiamo Monica Papagni, anche se sui social, e quando scrivo libri, uso lo pseudonimo di Melania Soriani (qualcuno di voi magari conosce "Bly", uscito l'anno scorso per Mondadori).

Ho 58 anni e cinque figli di cui due davvero speciali e bisognosi di molte attenzioni, Riccardo che ho adottato e che ha la Sindrome di Down e Simone che è nato con una malattia genetica rara : la Syngap1. Tre anni fa la mia vita è cambiata drasticamente, in bene e in male. Bene perché ho realizzato il mio sogno di pubblicare Bly, un romanzo a cui tenevo moltissimo; male perché qualche mese dopo la firma del contratto di pubblicazione mi è stato diagnosticato un cancro al seno. Così è iniziato un percorso sanitario davvero difficile che mi ha portato a due interventi, chemioterapie, radioterapie, cure farmacologiche: perché il mio cancro è diventato metastatico e inoperabile. Ho cambiato diverse cure senza particolari miglioramenti. Il farmaco che potrebbe tenere a bada il mio tumore ci sarebbe, ma non è ancora rimborsabile. Ho intrapreso una battaglia mediatica, nel tentativo di accelerare la rimborsabilità di Enhertu, ma nel frattempo avrei bisogno di iniziare la cura: ogni seduta di terapia costa 16.867,40 euro e ne dovrei garantire almeno otto. Nella foto della campagna ho riassunto un po' la mia vita, vita in cui ho sempre dato l'ultimo posto alla mia malattia. Adesso, però, non è più possibile fare finta di niente. Devo, voglio lottare con ogni mezzo per me stessa, ma soprattutto per i miei figli, per la mia famiglia. Vuoi aiutarmi?

ENGLISH: Ciao. My name’s Monica Papagni, although you may know me through my pseudonym, Melania Soriani, which I use on social media and as an author. (The Italian publisher, Mondadori, published my novel "Bly" about the famous American reporter Nellie Bly last year.)

I’m 58 years old and have five children, two of whom have special needs: our adopted son Riccardo has Down Syndrome and Simone was born with a rare genetic disease, Syngap1.

Three years ago my life changed dramatically, for better and for worse. The good news was that my novel “Bly” was accepted for publication. It was a dream come true. The bad news was that a few months after signing the publishing contract I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite two surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and drug treatments, my cancer became metastatic and inoperable. My doctors have tried several treatments but there’s been no particular improvement. There is, however, a treatment that could keep my cancer at bay but it has not yet been declared reimbursable by our Italian national health service. I’ve waged a media battle in an effort to speed up the process of making Enhertu reimbursable but so far nothing’s changed. And meanwhile, my cancer continues to do what cancers do. I need to start treatment but each treatment cycle costs 16,867.40 Euros and, in order to start, I would need to secure at least eight cycles.

In the composite photo for the campaign I’ve tried to summarize my life a bit, a life where I’ve tried to keep my disease in the background. But now, it’s no longer possible to pretend that nothing’s happening. I must, I want to fight by any means, not only for myself but especially for my children, for my family. Can you help me?
