TL;DR
I’m going to tell some octopus jokes, and talk about myself, and why you should care about octopuses and fund their adventures- <3 Ursula
Why did the octopus cross the coral?
***To get to the other tide!***
But seriously, I’m a 15 foot tall octopus named Ursula, and I’m going to Burning Man for the first time. I’m considered a very capable creature, but a girl needs some support y’all! Don’t you dare call me a ✨Sparkle ‘Puss✨CEPHALOPOD PLEASE! Instead, consider throwing out some $and dollar$, and I might tentickle your fancy.

A NOTE FROM THE ARTIST
Octopuses have always found their way into my art. They are incredibly unique creatures – they’re intelligent, crafty, and resourceful. They’re also very interesting to look at, with all those tentacles and suckers – their large heads and bulbous eyes. The Octopus is organic in its shape and in its flow. - there are many colors, textures, sizes , and movement. This makes it so unlike other animals whose bodies are more structured.
So, while one reason for wanting to use this as my subject was my love for the octopus and really wanting to “dive” in deep into the aspects of design with metals, glass, plastics, fire, and lights for this project – I also felt that bringing something beautiful from the ocean floor to the BRC would remind people of the vastness of our oceans and the quality of life there and to be mindful of the pollution they create. It’s a gentle reminder to take care of our Earth and to appreciate all life -Kelly Schott
From the same mermaid that brought you- “Isadora”, the bunny from the City of San Diego’s 150th Anniversary Celebratory project, ‘Rabbitville’; sponsored by, and featured at The Pendry Hotel. The Siren and creator of the kinetic sculpture “Genesis” , which moved throughout our souls and the universe beyond, we introduce "Pieuvre" as a San Diego based collaborative community arts project; backed by the ASAP Artist Collective, and chosen as part of the Honoraria for Burning Man 2019 - 'Metamorphoses', we present to our adoring fan corals, “Ursula”.
This beautifully ornate octopus will create an ethereal essence of submersion underwater into the deep depths of the sea by bringing the ocean floor to the ***playa***
Made of stainless steel, copper, and brass textured metals - the body form will feature delicate seaweed filigree accents LED lit suckers, and stained glass mosaics. An assortment of colors, textures, shape, line, and movement will be used to create contrasting visual effects and accentuate certain detailed decorative aspects of the body.
"Pieuvre" will hold fire lanterns to light up the night and heat us with her warmth. The support base will be a home of beautiful coral reef, swimming fish, and delicate sea anemone flowers that dance by our feet as we stand beneath her. When unattended at night, "Pieuvre" will glow with programmable LED's in her suckers that will lure in passerby with a visually stunning light show. The Moroccan lanterns, when lit on fire, will glow and burn softly.
Grant monies have been *graciously* awarded by both San Diego Collaborative Arts- and Burning Man. But there are many additional expenses not covered by these grants---However, we at *Pieuvre* want to assure all ships rise with the high tide- so any additional funding will go towards covering these costs. Fundraising will continue through the end of September. You can find us at San Diego Pride in Burner Village, various events supporting the arts in San Diego and perhaps a farmers market or two. We will update our list as new events and opportunities to share Ursula in all her glory arise. Please check back with us frequently to get the latest news on build progress, important dates and events, and to watch this young cephalopod grow into the majestic creature that captivates our mind, body and soul.
Funding will allow us to buy the additional materials needed for this project.
This includes:
Metals - bars, tubing, poles, joints, sheet metals, etc.
Hardware - nuts, bolts, screws, etc.
Lighting for the project - LED's, spotlights, etc.
Fire and Flame Effects - copper tubing, steel wool, wire, propane gas, hoses, pressure regulators, etc.
Fabrication costs - special use equipment, rentals, etc.
It will also help cover transportation costs including rental costs, gas, and insurance coverage to and from Burning Man - one of the biggest costs of this project.
A donation of any size is extremely helpful and very much appreciated.
