We are raising money in aid of Make a Difference Sri Lanka (MDSL) and every donation will help. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause which means so much to me.

I am Kumar! Director/Trustee and Project Manager with MDSL, a UK registered charity. Since its creation in 2011, MDSL has supported various educational projects all aimed at providing Primary Level Development (PLD) and Secondary Level Development (SLD) to vulnerable people. However, the community is still seeing the aftermath of the long conflict.

Our past work:

We have supported numerous projects with locals to establish small businesses and industries. We constructed mud houses and toilets, which also served as training opportunities for local youth. Additionally, we have supported fishermen and their families through educational, farming, agricultural, and livelihood projects, advancing Secondary Level Development (SLD) in the region.

Through PLD and SLD, we have helped roughly 750 beneficiaries, contributing to poverty eradication in the region. However, much more remains to be done.

Our current work:

We are currently supporting 34 A-Level students in the Eastern Province for their 2024 University entrance public examinations. This cohort will receive support until their exams in January 2025. Previous cohorts had impressive pass rates: 80.9% in 2022 (with 33% entering universities) and over 87% in 2023 (with 41.9% entering universities). The National College of Education is yet to announce their intake results. We are grateful to the David Tyler Trust for their support of this project.

Following PLD and SLD, we are now in the phase of Tertiary Level Development (TLD), focusing on creating a farm, Vilippu Koottu Pannai 1 (VKP1), in Paranthan, Kilinochchi. This mega-project aims to generate income, create jobs, and provide training and apprenticeships among the vulnerable, leading to Continuous Development (CD) designed for exponential growth.

Our future goals:

Our vision includes expanding our farm Vilippu Koottu Pannai 1 into VKP2, VKP3, and VKP4, spreading from the North to the East and eventually moving south. The CD process will create numerous jobs, training, apprenticeship positions, and seed various industries, benefiting the region significantly.

Our challenges:

The past three years have impacted our ability to fund projects due to COVID-19, global and local economic situations, and foreign exchange issues that have devalued the Sri Lankan Rupee, increasing project costs tremendously. The original estimated capital cost for VKP1 was around £16,500, but current conditions have driven costs up sixfold.

Our vision:

At MDSL, we aim to create long-term, self-sustaining development by helping these communities rise and live dignified lives. Our projects generate livelihoods and develop industries and infrastructure built by the community using skills learned through our programs. Supporting the young and vulnerable with education is imperative, as it is their birthright.
