The Wellesley Robotics Team is a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit that competes as Team Ultraviolet 8567 against other high school students in FIRST Robotics competitions. Our team was formed by 6 Wellesley High School students who wanted to take on a big and inclusive STEM challenge during COVID lockdown. We have grown this year to 47 student members who independently learned mechanical, electrical, coding and CAD (computer-assisted design) skills to design and build a 125-pound robot in a team member's garage. The learning, growth, and teamwork have been inspiring. The video above shows our robot in action at the March 2022 NE District North Shore competition, where we won the Rookie All Star Award and the Highest Rookie Seed Award. The team won the Rookie Inspiration award at a competition in Worcester on April 10.
Students run the team like a tech start-up by writing grants, marketing, and presenting their technical and community outreach initiatives to competition judges. We value inclusion. The team is approximately 30% women and 60% students of color. We do not charge fees for students to participate.
By donating today to the Wellesley Robotics Team, you help provide opportunities for teens in Wellesley to develop skills in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), leadership, entrepreneurship, communication, and teamwork. During a typical year, most successful FIRST teams spend $20,000-$50,000 on motors, gearboxes, controllers, wiring, hardware, vision systems, sensors, building supplies, registration fees and travel to competitions. To make the Wellesley Robotics Team competitive, we need funds to get ready for learning, building and competitions.
