Ukraine and Wales have much in common; their own language, emerging democracy, mining, poetry, music and a lot of choirs! Residents of Ukraine have been riding bicycles to get around for years, and the culture of mountain biking and the biking sector was growing – Ukrainians need bikes not bombings!
Wales’ historical links with Ukraine are strong with miles of railway lines laid using Welsh iron in the development of the railways in Ukraine throughout the 19C and the city of Hughesovka, now Donetsk, was developed by the Welsh Industrialist John Hughes and 100 Welsh migrants from Merthyr!
Welsh journalist Gareth Jones was fundamental in exposing genocide in Joseph Stalin's Holodomor policy of deliberate starvation that claimed the lives of 4-10m peasant farmers in Ukraine during 1932-33.
Get cycling and support Ukraine! And don’t forget to share your pictures too on:
Do you want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money in aid of Disasters Emergency Committee and every donation will help. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
More information about Disasters Emergency Committee: The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) - which in major crises brings together 14 leading UK aid charities to raise money to help save lives and rebuild shattered communities - is appealing for funds. The eight-year conflict in Ukraine has dramatically escalated. Heavy fighting, shelling and air strikes across Ukraine have had devastating consequences for the population with people forced to flee their homes to escape the violence. Please donate to help those affected.
