Kieashia "Kie" Edwell is a mother, Birth Doula, and founder of Elephant Song Doula Service in Pittsburgh, PA.
When she noticed of the lack of CULTURALLY RELEVANT CHILDBIRTH EDUCATION available for Black and Brown expectant families in the social media space, Kie began @YourBlackDoula as a passion project.
Utilizing platforms like Tik-Tok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, @YourBlackDoula's funny and heartfelt pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and lactation videos soon, gained thousands of views. With recent attention paid to the urgent Black Maternal Health Crisis, Kie is hoping that even more people see the value in educating and advocating for Black and Brown birthing people in the city of Pittsburgh.
Opening its doors at 5423 Penn Avenue in SEPTEMBER 2021, Elephant Song Doula Services hopes to provide affordable, compassionate, and inclusive maternal health care to our friends in the GARFIELD, BLOOMFIELD, and FRIENDSHIP neighborhoods for many years to come, but we need the help of our community! The next goal of @YourBlackDoula is to build a state-of-the-art Classroom and Studio space that allows Kie to offer her compassionate, fun, and REAL brand of CBE to a larger audience.
With the purchase of educational materials that feature Black & Brown families of all kinds, diagrams and 3D models, office furniture and supplies, and streaming technology, content can be created and shared both in-person and remotely.
With the purchase of video recording and sound equipment, interactive classes, youtube tutorials, and self-paced, online YourBlackDoula courses can be created to help expectant and new parents get tips on their upcoming birth and postpartum stages.
Funds will also be allocated to commission local Black artists to paint murals and display artwork featuring Pregnant and Breastfeeding Black bodies throughout the space.
We hope to have the space completed and open to the public by September 2021
"My own traumatic birth and my experience navigating a racist and sexist system through chronic illness (Lupus and Kidney Disease) have given me a very unique view into how big a part racism plays in the health of Black & Brown mothers. my goal is to teach as many expectant families as I can to be their own biggest advocate."
