Zoey's Extensive Medical Journey- Surgery Needed
Please help us get Zoey the surgery she needs to live a normal life!
Zoey's Story
We adopted Zoey from PetSmart through a local shelter 6 years ago. At the time, she was around 7 months old they assumed, and the sweetest little kitten. The deciding factor for me in adopting her was when she climbed into the crook of my neck and just stayed there for the longest time (she still does this as a small adult!) I was told that someone dropped her off outside the shelter in a cage. From the moment I met this sweet kitty, I promised her I would always take care of her, and she'd never be left out in the cold again.
A year later, she started getting recurring ear infections. The more we took her in, the more the vet realized that something more was going on. We kept trying different medications, to no avail. The infections came right back within a few months. It was then discovered that she had an ear polyp.. and her extensive medical journey began. We treated the symptoms for a long time, and finally decided to see a local specialist. The specialist recommended exploratory surgery to see where the polyp was attached. If he could remove it, he would, but stated he wouldn't know until he got in there. We agreed to do this surgery. $1000 later my poor cat came out worse than when she went in. He was unable to remove it, and she ended up with an upper respiratory infection. We almost lost her. Thankfully due to quick action and some injections we were able to get her feeling better.
Shortly after this surgery, she ended up with a hematoma on her right ear. This was due to excess scratching of the area. Another surgery resulting in around $600 was performed, leaving her with a "crinkly" ear.
Years went by, and we kept treating the symptoms. The doctors had told me that the best scenario would be to take her to a specialty hospital to see if they were able to remove the polyp. This surgery costs around $5000. That wasn't something we could afford and the doctors stated that we could just keep treating her symptoms. Hopefully it just won't get any worse...
Fast forward to today. For the past few months she has had a wound on her neck that will not heal. It heals for about a month, then when the medication wears off it comes right back. The doctor thinks it is infection from the polyp that is unfortunately pushing out through that area. We keep treating it, but with long term steroid use, it can cause a whole host of other issues. This poor cat has been through so much in her 7 years of life already, I want to try to cure this once and for all.
That's why I'm asking my friends and family for any help you can provide to help offset these costs. I know cats have a reputation for being selfish, but not Zoey. As I write this she's currently sleeping on my chest, where she spends most of her day. She greets us at the door when we get home, and she's the sweetest cat I've ever met. My daughter and Zoey are inseparable. When I found out I was considered high risk after having a miscarriage, Zoey became my second baby. She is my daughter's unofficial therapy animal for her anxiety as well. If you can find it in your hearts to help us help her we would be forever grateful.
Thank you for hearing our story.
