A Birthday Campaign In Memory of My Mother

Donation protected
My birthday has always been the same; a Halloween evening filled with trick or treaters, pizza and cake around the kitchen table. This year it’s going to be different. With my mom not being here, I’m totally not looking forward to it.

This year for my birthday, I’m asking for your support in raising funds for a cause that was dear to my mother - Khalsa Aid. This initiative is to commemorate my mom, a woman who dedicated her life in serving others through Seva (service to others).

I always knew how much she had dedicated her life to helping others but it wasn’t until her passing that I came to realize just how many people she helped throughout her lifetime.

Out of the 450+ guests that attended her Monday morning funeral, the number of individuals and families that approached me to share their stories of how my mother helped them at their most vulnerable time truly inspired me. She helped anyway she could - from helping newcomers open up their first bank accounts in a foreign land, helping families find their first home, to teaching women how to drive for the first time. She never gave it a second thought when it came to helping others. She always kept her doors open to give families a place to start and get on their own two feet.

My mom played an active role in raising not only three daughters of her own, but also her nieces, nephews and grandchildren. She had always been a maternal figure for so many. Her true strength and resilience was reflected when, as a young 20 year old, she sponsored not only my father, but  also his entire family. She did this with her own hard earned income while supporting herself as well as her mother.

My mom was a true Social Worker at heart. She dedicated her entire life to helping others. She never complained and until her last days, she stayed true to her values and beliefs.

On December 20th, 2019, my mom passed. I think of all that she left behind; the roots that she helped others plant, the helping hand she gave to others, the joy she brought to so many of the children in her life. She exemplified the act of Seva, every day of her life.

This year for my 32nd birthday, I invite you to join me in commemorating my mother, by donating to Khalsa Aid, an organization which is dedicated to helping those in need. This year has been a difficult one, but, we can all do a little something to help those who are struggling more than we are.

A little kindness goes a long way.

Thank you,
