A Bridge for Bryan, Jane, and Jacob

Short version: my brother urgently needs a bridge rebuilt before winter. Unprecedented flooding in Vermont have washed out his bridge, leaving him and his family stranded.

Bryan, a former contractor now in his sixties, had his life overturned when seizures forced him to discontinue his work in his early forties. He and his family live on a Vermont property where he built a home. Unfortunately, recent storms transformed the peaceful river running through the property into an uncontrollable torrent, destroying their bridge that gives them access to public roads and essentially isolating them.

To make things worse, Bryan is battling a rare autoimmune disease called pemphigus foliaceous. His mobility is limited due to osteoporosis, a side effect from his treatment, requiring him to use braces and a cane. For him, partner Jane, and their adopted grandson, Jacob; transporting food, supplies and firewood across the river presents a daunting task. This is made even more strenuous for a family grappling with health complications, mobility issues and the responsibilities of caring for a young child.

The upcoming winter intensifies their crisis, relying on wood heating for the house. Without a bridge, they can’t receive wood delivery and can’t transport wood themselves.

Bryan, a loving and generous man, has faced many hardships, and his life-threatening disease and the recent destruction of his bridge are just two of them. All his resources are stretched between his medical care and raising Jacob. To Bryan, a bridge is not just a convenience. It’s a necessity for survival.
