A Car for Kerri

What a summer.

Mid-June, I made the difficult decision to step out of my regular life pattern and enter a detox/rehab program.  This drastic, necessary choice meant missing shows, physical distance from friends and family, and setting aside life as usual.

I didn’t realize that it would also mean feeling frustrated and helpless as life, the Universe, and everything went haywire.

My Mom got sick and had to be admitted to the ER and then a recovery facility, and I cannot visit or be there for her.  I can call, but it’s not the same as being present.

And then…

On July 23 around 5:30 in the morning, my friend and housemate, Jon, was driving home from work when, in the darkness at a dangerous spot on the highway, he encountered an accident.

Newly occurred, un marked, unlit, unseen until the last moment, he swerved to avoid only to encounter another unlit, disabled vehicle.

The Highlander did its job and gave its life.  Jon is as ok as can be expected.  The Highlander is totaled.

For 20 years, over drives both long and short, for business, family, and pleasure, the Highlander (aka Umicar, from Umizoomi) was my noble steed.  It carried me and my family over 200,000 miles in all kinds of weather.  

Now, it is no more and I am left without a vehicle.  Insurance will sort things out, but given the age and mileage, likely won’t pay out enough for even one car payment, let alone a down payment.

I’m staying the course with rehab because that’s what is best for me, my family, and my business, but it’s difficult.
