CANADA’S FIRST EDUCATION BANK serving at risk yout
My name is Theresa Pastore and I am the Executive Director of Parents Engaged in Education, a charity that has supported parents and students with free resources and skill building opportunities for children/teens in low income communities in Ontario since 2015.
March break in 2020 might be the most remembered March Break for decades to come. Unfortunately it isn't for a good reason. Students did not return to school after March Break due to COVID-19. There is no doubt that this pandemic effected everyone in one way or another; but we at Parents Engaged In Education (PEIE) would say that one of the most affected demographic were the students. PEIE reacted swiftly in our response to the pandemic by immediately seeking donors both financial and in-kind. Thanks to our donors we were able to produce and distribute over 1600 Learn at Home Kits. These kits were filled with a variety of things; including learning activities, games, colouring books, readers, coupons and more to help sustain a healthy mind, both educationally and emotionally. Although it had a great impact, these kits were only a grassroots initiative. Our real purpose for children all over Ontario is to establish a Family Service Centre which will feature an education bank. This bank will operate similar to a food bank; students will come in (with ID) and be able to pick out supply etc. that they need.
This would be a FIRST OF IT'S KIND EDUCATION BANK IN CANADA.
To keep this bank sustained and filled we are going to need support. We created this account hoping to reach others who believe that the mind also needs to be fed. There are children and youth all over the world who are suffering and are at a great disadvantage when it comes to learning and education. With a Family Service Centre and Education Bank we can provide children and youth with the support and resources they need.
We are thankful to those who've donated to our Learn at Home Kits initiative and to those who are committed to keeping the bank sustained and filled. No donation is too small so we are asking for your help to create a larger network of support and resource to give children and youth what they all need; a mind, heart and soul that deserves to be fed!
As a wholly volunteer organization we are happy to confirm that every penny raised will go towards establishing the Family Service Centre/Education Bank.
Thank you for your generosity!
