A Community Building for Hornbrook, California
Tax deductible
We are so close! The Hornbrook Community Association has been working hard since the Klamathon Fire to bring a community space back to Hornbrook! With unanimous support from the the Siskiyou County Board of supervisors and tireless dedication from the Siskiyou County Planning Department, we are incredibly close to securing a grant to purchase the J&D Diner in downtown Hornbrook. We may finally be able to have a community space for Hornbrook once again.
The final step? the support from YOU-- our community! We need to demonstrate that we have enough community support to complete the necessary renovations to open the doors to the public--specifically the renovations to make the restaurant handicap accessible.
Can you make a donation to help us make a space for Hornbrook? We can accept donations here, in our PO Box (P.O. Box 422, Hornbrook, CA 96044) or even a pledge, promising to donate if we get the grant to purchase the building.

BACKGROUND:
Since 1911 Hornbrook’s Grange Hall supported the community activities of Hornbrook, California. They would host graduation and dances, evenings of knitting & snacks, holiday affairs and community canning efforts. More recently, the infamous Friday night Taco feeds raised money to maintain the building and made a weekly space for Hornbrook residents to gather with their neighbors and build a strong rural community able to survive anything the world threw at it.
In 2018, the Klamathon Fire ripped through the small community of Hornbrook, burning down much of Main Street and the nearly 100 year old Grange Hall. The loss of Hornbrook’s community building shocked the town. Hornbrook Community Association had to quickly switch gears to continue their mission without their beloved community building.
From the flames the Healing Hornbrook Community Project was born. Healing Hornbrook & the Hornbrook Community Association hosted a series of conversations to better understand what the community of Hornbrook would like to see in the wake of the fire. We heard time and time again that Hornbrook wanted to see their community building rebuilt, and Hornbrook work together to become a clean, safe & vibrant community once again
Hornbrook Community Association went to work on these goals, they started Open Mic nights at the local saloon, they hosted community meetings to get more people involved, worked with county agencies, started a small emergency food bank and most recently helped the fire department raise money for a new water tender truck. The hardest part, however, is to rebuild the community center, like everyone had hoped.
Over the past year, HCA has been looking at sites in Hornbrook that would be able to support the community center of Hornbrook’s dreams. The site with the most immediate promise is the J&D Diner, located in the center of town near the Post Office. This site has the potential to host a community meeting space and maybe even revive the traditional Taco Nights missed by so many. With the support of the Community Development Block Grant of Siskiyou County, and additional $17,500 in community support Hornbrook Community Association will be able to purchase the diner, and complete the necessary renovations to open a space for Hornbrook to create community once again.
