A Gathering of Tribes supports diverse, traditionally under-represented artists and writers, amplifying the emerging and established revolutionary voices of our time.
AGOTT is also committed to honoring and memorializing our founder, Steve Cannon’s life and legacy.

- Received accolades from The New York Times, Art Forum, Hyperallergic, Poetry Flash, and others.
- Distributed $15,000 to traditionally under-represented artists and writers.

A Gathering of the Tribes is a proud member of the Coalition of Small Arts New York (CoSA).
What do we mean by traditionally under-represented?
We support artists and writers who identify as black, brown, otherly-abled, indigenous, immigrant, LGBTQ, and female and from working-class or impoverished backgrounds.
Why is diversity so important in literature?
Only a small percentage of writing published in the U.S. is literary (poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction). Small presses account for more than 90% of literary writing that gets published in the U.S. The vast majority of authors being published identify as straight, white and cis. Authors of minority identities still face massive obstacles to accessing representation and public platforms in the arts. A Gathering of the Tribes believes that when traditionally overlooked artists and authors come together, our voices become stronger than ever. We are working to ensure that no artist or writer is overlooked simply because of their identity, and are paving the way to center those who have had to speak from the margins for too long.
With your support, can continue achieving our mission which has remained radical;ly important since our founding in 1991!
